my 05 speedomter reads anywhere from over 100mph at a stop or 0 at any speed...ive already replaced the speed sensor in the diff...its a kr so it has the electonic dash...on older models i was able to test the gauges by holding the reset button and turning the key on but on the new models that doesnt work...does anyone know how to check the gauges on newer model trucks? everything still functions normally (cruise, abs, etc)...anything else anyone can recommend i should check
Being it's an 05, there still should be some kind of warranty available. I would suspect the cluster is damaged, it's a common problem on chevy digital dashes. The only problem I every remember on a ford is our 84 Tbird cluster light went out and we couldn't read the speedo.
not sure on the newer trucks but i know on the older ones most everything on the dash ran thru an general electronics module, my started acting up and would not let my dash or brake lights work,
i would think that it would be the gem or the cluster
apparently it was a problem on some of the 05s...has anyone had their clusters replaced?...it is still under warranty but im out of town now and dont know or trust any dealers...im scared my dash is going to get all scratched up to get to the cluster

ill give it a try but a ford tech told me that with my symptoms the cluster would more than likely have to be changed...i ate $60 for the vehicle speed sensor but im more reluctant to bite the bullet on the cluster ~$350 and i never got my fuel retainer clip recall done
2005 F-Series Speedometer Needle Bounce, Cruise Control Drop Out, DTC P0500, and/or Uncommanded Wiper Activation:
If any of the above conditions are present, inspect the wiring harness running behind the coolant bottle to the wiper motor for chafing on a brake line clip and shorting to ground. If harness damage is found, repair and insulate the damage, and secure the harness away from the clip. Broadcast Message 3695.
Similar problem on my 06 F250 PSD CC FX4 Lariat. Had the issue about a month ago where the speedo was reading 100+ while driving through residential streets, took to dealer and they couldn't find a problem. Had the issue again, this time dealer saw it as well. You could turn the truck off and see the speedo sitting at 70+.....................very strange.
So, after they diagnosed a unrelated alternator problem and installed a new one, they have decided to replace the dash cluster. No trouble codes were found though, but they have had another truck with the same issue and feel that changing the cluster will eliminate the issue.
exactly the same problem as mine...so far no problems with the new cluster and did they damage any of the dash to get it off (scratches, alignment issues, etc)?
Nope - No damage, no scratches (I have the wood grain dash), everything works. Of course, I will be keeping my eye on everything to see if it acts up again. I guess the cluster means everything you see on the dash. They replaced everything. I also had a new alternator installed because it was occasionally lighting the battery light.
I've had my speedo inop on 2 occaisions. Just read 0 at various speeds, then started working outta the blue. It only stopped working for a few minutes, I have not checked the wires or performed any tsb recommendations.
