AC compressor replacment/converting?

Question AC compressor replacment/converting?

I'm tired out trying to figure out why I can't get the new clutch I installed on my compressor to work. It's old and makes a bit of noise, but when the clutch actually works, the air is very cold. I want to just install a new compressor, but i'm still using R12. My question is if I take it to a shop and have it replaced can the capture the R12 and transfer it back after the new compressor is installed? If not and they force you to convert to R134, how much cash am I looking at assuming I buy the new compressor myself and bring it to them to install?

I dont get it.....your saying its a new comp clutch, but you also say its old and makes noise...????? If the new comp clutch is for your compressor I think its a FS-10 it should work no problem. Are you 100% sure the new clutch is the correct part?

This was discussed at length in another thread. I think you have the wrong clutch installed massey. I believe that you should have the one with the three big rivets and not the one with the flat face.

The clutch is new, the compressor is old allthough it works fine (makes a little noise when running)on the rare occasions when the clutch works.

The old clutch was flat and did not have the three bolts on it either, and the system worked fine the last time I used it this time last year.

Basically I just need to know if their going to force me to convert to R134, because I really don't want to cough up the extra cash at the moment if I don't have to.

Unless you have a recovery machine there is no saving you r12 But a shop will charge you an arm and a leg to do the work.
If the shop has an A/C machine then it should be able to recover your freon and filter it.

I don't mean to jump you thread but there's a kit out that converts your system to 134. I just bought it at Advance for like 35 bucks. Has anyone used this or know what I'm talking about?

You don't need the adaptor kit just the adaptor fittings and a hose and fittings.
But those will probly cost you about the same as the kit.
