A/C compressor smoking question

I believe my clutch is shot in my 93 F-150. When I turn the A/C on the belt just slides over the pully, and the compressor ticks and only turn about a 1/4 turn. I'm just going to pull an A/C compressor from the junkyard so I don't have to hassle with taking the clutch off. I was wondering if Ford used the same compressors for all cars and trucks for that year. Would I be able to use a compressor from a E150, Windstar, or even a town car for example. If not, what should I look for in the part number? Never worked with on any A/C system before. Before I put the compressor on how do I evacuate the system and does the whole system have to be replaced of just flushed? It's a 93 with R12 so I'm going to have to convert. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A/C compressor smoking question

It sounds to me like your clutch is trying to engage and the compressor is locked up. Converting is not a big deal, but you might want to change your dryer since it would have collected all of crap out of your system. While it is apart, you should also change your expansion tube. They sometimes get dirty and plugged up. I would suggest you spend the money and get a new or rebuilt compressor. I bought a salvage one once and it crapped out after less than one summer. After you have the system all put back together, get a vacuum pump, and hook it up to your guages and pull it down and make sure it will hold vacuum. Leave the vacuum on the system and whenever you connect the freon to your guages, just let it suck in what it will, this will keep most of the air/moisture out of your system. Then start the compressor and add the proper amount of freon. Another thing that i have been told is that the condensor for 134a has more and smaller tubes in it to cool the refridgerant better. I replaced every part of my 91 a/c and went back with freeze 12. It is a blend that you can dump right on top of r-12, but you do have to have a liscence to buy it. It seems to cool better in mine than 134a does. You might call an A/C shop and after you have your system all back together have them vac it down and charge it back up.
