All,
I have a 1990 E-350 7.5 with a siezed a/c compressor. I thought I would convert it to R-134A. I spent some time reading the posts and went ahead and purchased a reman. compressor and a new Accumulator and decided to chance it with a death kit (hell the compressor got a year warranty). I had the system discharged and then yanked the old compressor (dumping and measuring the oil first) when i got the new compressor I thought it was strange that i could not freely turn the clutch. I could turn the pulley though. I went ahead and installed the new accumulator with new o-rings and then the compressor with new ester oil (same amount i took out). I put my socket on the clutch and turned several times to circulate the oil. I then turned over the van and the a/c would engage. I believe i could hear it attempting to engage, but no clutch action.
Can anybody shed some light on this? Did i get a screwed up compressor or is there something else I'm missing.
Thanks in advance,
Eric Fernald
no, only the pulley will spin when not engaged. The clutch is attached to the input shaft on the compressor and spins the shaft when engaged. It won;t engage if the pressure switch on the freon reservoir doesn;t indicate sufficiant pressure.
If you read the instructions, they should warn you NOT to use the engine to pre-lube the compressor. You could hydrolock it and break it. Do it with the wrench for at least as many turns as the instructions say, and be SURE you're using 46 viscosity PAG oil - NOT the standard 100 or 150 that comes in most kits. Fords use the low-vis PAG. You shouldn't use ester for anything.
