I had to put in a new clutch.
Now I cant get the shift housing on
(in a way that will actually shift the gears).
The tranny is in a gear but I dont know which
because the output shaft spins when I start
it up.
Any advice on 1) how to install the shifter
2) how to determine what gear I'm in
3) how to get it in neutral w/o the shifter
(I think it may help- don't know why)
First did you take the whole top off the tranny or just the cap on the shift tower? If just the cap, take a long large screwdriver and a flashlight, look in the hole, you will see three rails with a notch in the center, line up all three notches , this will be the neutral position, now put the shifter back in and make sure it goes through the gears. Good luck, RICH
Got this figured out after all.
Here is some info on the gears, how the tranny works for those interested.
For the New Process 4 speed tranny:
Looking from the top down
The biggest gear farthest to the back is 1st gear.
When 1st gear is all the way back, the tranny’s in 1st
When 1st gear is all the way forward, the tranny’s in 2nd
When 1st gear is in the middle, the tranny is not in 1st or 2nd
3rd and 4th gears are the farthest forward (there is a thin disc between them- 4th gear is farthest forward)
When the disc is all the way back, the tranny’s in 3rd
When the disc is all the way forward, the tranny’s in 4th
When the disc is in the middle, the tranny is not in 3rd or 4th
When 1st gear is in the middle AND the disc is in the middle, the tranny’s in neutral
the forks attached to the shift lever just push 1st gear and the
2nd,3rd gear disc back and forth.
To replace the shift cover, put the gears in neutral
(can move easily by hand), and the cover will go on.
