Cough.....Cough....Start

I have....well I dont really call it a problem, more of an irritating occurance. When I start the truck after the wait light goes out, the truck will start but i really got to put my foot into it, and let it cough a bit before it rumbles to life, not much maybe two seconds, three. If i dont put my foot all the way into it though, it will start and then die quickly. It is an 86' f-250 with the good ol' 6.9L IDI. Is it just cuz the engine is older and compression is dropping? or what. Help would be appreciated.

you might have fuel bleeding back from the system or bad glow plugs. try parking with the nose low (downhill) and see if makes a difference. If that makes difference, you have air intrusion or bleed back. If no difference that way, try using the block heater for a couple hours before takoff and see if that helps. If the block heater makes a difference, you have glow plug issues.

My 97 was starting hard like yours. I found out that one of my two batterys was no good. I replaced the batterys and it started like it always did. Just a thought, check the batterys!
