Engine stumbles when it rains

This is sorta long. Please be patient. I have an '02 7.3 Crew cab 4x4. It is doing two things and I don't know if they are related so here goes.

Problem #1 I tow a 12,000lb trailer with electric brakes. I have a Drawtite Electric brake module plugged into the factory harness. I turn up the intensity of the controler when the trailer is loaded with my Track hoe. When under these conditions and I apply the brakes the engine dies. If I turn down the intensity it is ok.

Problem #2 When I drive it in the rain the engine will momentarily shut down then come back. It is almost like it just drops out for a second. Sometimes when I come to a stop it will just die. It restarts without any problems. After three times the check engine light comes on. I bought a code reader and am waiting on it to do it again. I accidently erased the codes when I was working on my trailer winch circuit breaker connected to the battery. oops.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

one problem sounds like typical CPS problems, search for the location pictures, front bottom of engine pass side near crank pulley, connect and disconnect the wires a couple of times spraying something like wd40 like holy water to clean up contacts. worse case is you may need a new one.

other sounds like you have multi axles and the brake is sucking up way too much current. Perhaps find a different feed, like the cigar lighter. Should be ( but not guaranteed) the red wire on the controller.

Good luck

well this is a long shot. the idm is right behind the left inner fenderwell. it could be getting wet or water in it when it rains causing problems.

Welcome to FTE Geezer 7.3.
I agree with what poitrsko said. I sounds like you have two problems. You may need to run a separate wire for the brakes on the trailer that is activated with a load reduction relay or something.

Thanks fellas,

I ordered a IHC cps and will install asap. I will check the fenderwell IDM and do a wiggle test this weekend. You guys are the best. I may replace the trailer brake controler with proportional one (Prodigy) and see what happens. This trailer is also pulled by a 2006 Bowtie Duralax with no electrical problems.

Thanks for the responses. I will let you know what happens.

I had a problem with my truck running some what like yours in the rain. I cleaned all of the plugs and connections under the hood with electrical connection cleaner, including the CPS. That cured whatever the problem was.

Update

I have an update. I changed the cps (blue IH) and installed a prodigy brake controller. I drove through biblical rains last week here in Tampa and no more problems.

I appreciate all of the help.
