I have a F-250, Crew Cab, 4x4, 4 speed, with a 5.8L........ For the life of me I can not find out what motor it really is..... all I can find out is that it is possibly 351 windsor..... I need an intake manifold, for a 2 barrel carb, aluminum..... and now I am told that is might be 351 Modified........ and I am told that there is a big difference between the 2 manifolds.......
According to the VIN, it's a 1983.
But for this discussion- 5.8L, Windsor or Modified. Windsor has a separate timing cover, and squarish ports in the head. All rockers are in a straight line, front to back.
Modified (Cleveland) has the timing chain cover cast as part of the block. Ports in head are rounded. Valves are "canted" (tipped) towards their respective ports.
But most likely, it's a Windsor.

The valve covers should give it away. The 351M valve gasket area is pretty much a rectangle. While the 351W is more rounded on ends up by the intake manifold. Post some pictures of the engine if you can. But most likely you have a windsor.
Another way to check is to look at the intake manifold. A windsor has the thermostat housing on the front of the intake manifold where the top rad hose is located along with the water pump bypass hose. A modified has the thermostat housing bolted to the block not the intake manifold.
Google images of "ford 351M" to see pics.
As DetailerDave said, the M pretty much ended in 82. A 1991 would have a windsor.
