I noticed that the 1996 EXP Sport I have has about 3/4 of an inch free play in the steering wheel... even with the truck not running.
in other words, when you drive it, there is a bit of a gap between steers - it's not too bad for around town, but on the highway doing 70, it's a little bit scarry to me...
is this in the front end? or the wheel itself? Ball Joints? TR Ends?
You need to have someone move the wheel back and forth lightly (not enough to move the wheels) while you watch all the steering linkages watching for play. It may have play in more than one place. All tie rods ends and other pivot points should not have any play at all.
yeah, I will have to do that... just didn't know if the Explorers had any issues with the steering stem, etc...
It almost seems like it's more in the wheel itself... maybe there is a bushing or something in the column? Don't know...
I know that I can check the wheels themselves too, like they do for a safety inspection, to check for ball joints, etc... be great if it was just a couple of tie rod ends... but I don't know if I'll be that lucky :-)
