I have a 5R55E 5sp auto in my 2004 ranger, and I have been having a little trouble with it since I bought it 4 mos ago. When I go from reverse to drive, it takes getting the engine up to 2000-2500rpm to get moving and it engages hard. The shift from 2-3 takes more engine rpm than any other shift, and that too is rough (only at slow acceleration, when I am accelerating quickly, it does not happen). My truck has 38000 miles on it, so the warranty is out of the question. Any advice?
The car version of the 5R55 has had some problems, I have heard the same about the truck versions.
The valve body and or solenoids go bad which leads to harsh shifts and stumbles etc. There can be a lot of heat build up due to this problem which eventually will destroy the tranny.
There was a customer satisfaction program at least with Lincolns where they went as far as doing a minor rebuild of the tranny at no cost including loaner car. Don't know if the program applies to any other Ford vehicles or if it is still on. You might call Ford customer service and check it out.
My 2004 Lincoln LS has the same tranny and at about 14,000 miles it started shifting really hard, so hard I thought I had been rear ended a couple times. Then other times it would kind of stumble thru the gears. Took it to a local Lincoln dealer after I talked with customer service department and was told about the program. They dropped the tranny, replaced the valve body and solenoids and a few other parts like clutches I think, kind of a mini rebuild. Didn't cost me a penny.
Jim, your car was covered under warranty, mine is not. I checked the fluid levels when I first got it, and they were fine. I will check them again today or tomorrow. The only Ford dealership around here has a "transmission guy" that's never around. But I will gve customer service a call, and see what I can find.
Most of the time customer satisifation programs extend to outside of the warranty period. It is sorta like they know that they have a problem and they don't want to have a recall so if they can just keep the few people that have the problem happy they can escape the problem. It dosen't hurt to check into it and seem like you might be a problem person while acting very nice and things start to happen. BTW I had a 03 LS with a problem shuddering while shifting gears. The dealership changed the fluid and put in a friction modifier and everthing was normal after that. That was a service suggestion that Ford made but was not a TSB but they still did it for free.
