68 convertible?

I am seriously considering cutting the top off of my 68. But I would like to have an idea of what it could look like. I have searched the galleries and unless I have missed it, cannot find a pic of one. Anyone with a pic, let me know.

Check out http://www.old-fords.com/drivers.htm - Driver 130. It is a 55, but shows how they look. It is a thumbnail picture - you click on it to see a larger one.

I've seen this done with a fold down roof from a military truck, most likely an old duece and a half style cab. Looked kind of cool.

What are you trying to get out of making it a convertible? A sun/moon roof might yeild the desired effect you're looking for and be much easier. Just a thought.

what i am trying to accomplish is something that is not common. just like some people want to keep their truck looking like it just rolled off the line (something different compared to what you see every day), i would like to make my truck a custom one of a kind... again, just like a fully restored truck. hey, give me a break.... i could be putting a bowtie under the hood with a big ole whale tail wing off of a honda.... don't get me wrong... different but not my kind of different. i'm sure you can sympathize.

Give us a break, no one suggested you not do this. JD asked why you wanted a convertable - in no way did he put you down for wanting to make that change.

The real problem is that it is hard to modify this style of truck. It is a box, and there is not much you can do to change it.

I used a drawing program to cut the top off a 69 in a picture I already had so you can get an idea of what it might look like.

So you don't want to put a roof on it? The military type I saw many years ago was a true convertable, and the roof lines were very angular and utilitarian. I might also add it was done to a 4x4....

I wasn't trying to dissuade you from doing what you'd like with your truck. That's why I asked what your goal was. If all you wanted was the sun and wind in your hair while driving I was thinking a sun roof would be an easier project and would yield the same desired effect. If all you're looking for is something uncommon, that might still be an option for you. Good luck whatever you decide.

What makes it so hard? Isn't it nothing more than just cutting and body work? I like what it looks like? I'd do it if I had the skill.

The advantage you have with this idea on a truck is at least it isn't a uni-body (ie: Classic Mustang) where the vehicle thing is held together by the whole structure.

You actually have a full frame to work with.

You would have to reinforce the windshield pillars and the back panel for sure.

Check in the 73-79 forum for the "Burning Man" truck project.

Qman, physically it is no different than any other truck. I guess what I am saying is that 67 and up trucks are shaped like a box and that I have a difficult time visualizing any change to the outline of that box that would be an improvement.

If you have an idea, let's hear it.

Look in the 1959 or 1960 photo gallery. I remember seeing one there a few years back that is topless that would be similar to a 67-72 style.

Thumbs up

How about this. A hard cover (ala T-bird Sport Roadster) with the cab extended enough to house the soft retractable top.It would also have the headrest attached to it. Chop the top a little with a slight lowering. WillyB, I hope you don't mind me using your picture. I think something like this would look sharp. Good luck.

Now that is a start - but tell me how you are going to hold the windows when they are rolled up? You used the door frame up to the top of the wing vents, but the back/top corner is not supported.

I like your idea - and I hate roadster pickups!

Use any of my images you wish . . .
