Last week I noticed a few drips of oil on the ground under my 01 F350 7.3 PSD. It has steadily increased to the point where I believe it is nearly emptying my oil out, at least it is not on the dip stick any longer. I have checked the oil before any drive to work and such. I have always topped it off, but now it is leaking way too much. There is oil splattered up my tailgate it is so bad. I have been told it is either the rear main seal, the sending unit or some sort of O ring in the middle of the engine. There is oil pooling below the fuel filter and all the way to the back of the trough or what ever you want to call the valley on top of the engine. Any ideas? I am not sure what to look for because I have not done much work on this diesel before. Not sure where the sending unit is or where these O rings are? Thanks for any help
Just left this reply for you on the SD forum. Here you go again. Follow the lines coming from the HPOP. There are o-rings on the lines where they go into the oil rails. there are also test plugs along the rails with o-rings as well. If it is on the high pressure side, you should see the oil leaking out while engine is running. You may want to clean the engine with degreaser and water hose first to clean all the oil off. Run you engine and see if you see any leaks. If not run it for a few miles the check again.
i doubt a rear main leak would reach the top of the engine by the fuel filter so my guess would either be a hpop leak or a turbo o-ring leak. do you have any mods done or is it stock? those 2 places would be my guess maybe someone else can help you out more. maybe fill the truck with oil and start it and crawl up by the engine and try to see if you notice oil pouring out anywhere
my guess would have to be High Pressure oil squirting out, if it is coming out that fast. the oil is pressurized at 500 psi or more at idle, so even at idle, a small leak can go a long way. let me look in my manual and see if i can post up a pic of the circuit on the engine.
I had the same symptoms where it was a little drop and then all of a sudden it was pooring out like you said and left a puddle in the valley on top of the engine. Mine got the tires oily and became slippery so be careful. It ended up being a o-ring from the hpop.
Ok, I am going to try and degrease the top of the engine and check it out while running. I am taking a guess that Hpop means High pressure oil something or other. I hope it is as easy as you all say to see the leak. I had a problem getting the fuel filter to seat a few weeks ago. Took two days to get it to stop leaking and a bunch of elbow grease along with an old fan belt to tighten it up. Maybe all that fuel got something deteriorating. Ill let you all know what happens
HPOP= High Pressure Oil Pump. Rectangular metal box looking thing just in front of fuel fuel. Is it possible you put pressure on it or some of the lines during you fight with the fuel filter?
man, i had it all typed up and then the internet kicked out. here i will try it again.
the first pic is the location of the two hoses that come out of the pump. it is right below the Powerstroke cover on top of the engine, right below and left of the fuel filter canister. the second pic is of the tool needed to remove the lines.

You got it Ray, HPOP is the high pressure oil pump. It is located right below the powerstroke cover. Just like Zx250 and everyone else said start here and follow the lines cooming from the pump. There is also a 11/16" plug on the back side (assuming you are standing in front of the truck) of the HPOP, on the drivers side and below the fuel filter, kid of behind the two lines shown in the photo above. At least that is the size on my 2003 7.3L. Check this out also. Mine worked loose at only 50,000 miles - but I think the chip helped it out . After you clean the engine & fill the oil you should not have that difficult of a time finding the leak.
I though mine was a rear main seal also. The oil drains down between the engine & tranny making a huge mess and makes it look like a rear main seal problem. At 450-3,000 psi the oil comes out real fast! You'll find it - this is not an uncommon problem. There are great folks on this site that will help out - you can count on that.
P.S. Grab a Haynes F250-350 repair manual. They come in handy.

They're all telling you the good poop. It is imperative that you get the truck parked and thouroughly clean it in order to pinpoint not only the leak, but ensure that the repair has solved the problem.
ok got it cleaned and filled with 4 qts of fresh oil. Started it and just as you said, there is a steady steam on the drivers side under the fuel filter. Where do I get that tool and o ring at. Is that all to the repair? Thanks so much for the assistance.
Home depot or any ACE hardware should have something in that size to solve the prob temporarily. But then you must order the correct parts and replace the bandaid. I'm not on top of the sources at the moment but someone will chime in soon I'm sure.
You all are awsome! I believe I can get the parts here in town tomorrow. I hope anyway. I don't know about that tool, but I will check on it. I am sure it will make things easier. Having the right tool always does. Thanks again. I will post tomorrow to let you know how it all went.
