I am considering rebuilding my instrument cluster. does anyone have any advice on this? I will hopefully purchase new 12v gauges ( probly mid fifty) and am thinking of adding oil and gen guages insted of lights. was there any to tell what guages the truck came with? 1954 f 100? I know what is there now but were the oil and gen optional? aslo what about paint and such? does anyone make an overlay so i would not have to paint? anyother advice would be great. thanks
I've rebuilt a few of the 53-55 clusters. Most had 4 guages, some had just 2 guages, 2 idiot lights. I don't know what model trucks they came from, so it's tough to tell. If I were to guess, I'd say the large trucks had all guages and the pickups had 2 and 2. Ford started to cut back on guages, used painted hubcaps instead of plated ones. Painted bumpers were more common than chrome.
You might check with Haneline. They make intrument clusters with modern guages for classic trucks and cars. Maybe they can sell you parts. www.hanelineproducts.com
Do a search on this site. About 6 months ago one of our own rebuilt the cluster on their 60 (don't quote me on this, Ive slept since then). He dis a great job, repainted all the faces, renumbered them, etc.
Take a look at my gallery called "tightwad cluster" I adapted the gauge cluster from an early 90's Chevy van into my bezel.
There are several companies that overhaul old gauges, or adapt them to modern functions. Do an internet search for "gauge restortation" etc.
Thats a good one but not the one I was refering to. The thread was about a guy on here who completely redid his original gague faces. Did and excellent job on it
