I went to circuit city today and the guy at the cash register had a nametag on it that identified him as the "Store Director". I asked what that title meant (although I think I already knew) and he told me he was the boss of the store, the head guy. I asked if that meant he was the "manager" and he said that was the case except they don't call it "manager". I asked why not. He told me they just don't.
Now, I have been going to CC for many years and know for fact they used to have store managers. Is this another politically correct move to eliminate the word MAN from the English language? MANager doesn't indicate gender any more than huMAN does.
We can't call our foremen at work foremen, even when they are a man. They are now all forepersons even though we have almost no women doing the job.
Am I the only one that thinks this PC crap is ridiculous and nonsensical?
On an unrelated note, I really wanted to ask the "Director" why he was manning the cash register when there were several of his Directees standing around doing nothing. Oops, did I say "manning"? I meant he was personing the cash register.
Not sure if it would be a similar situation, but a company I used to work for got into a lawsuit because the manager didn't respond to a situation. Honestly, that's all the detail I can give, because it's all I know, but after that the managers weren't called "manager" anymore, it was like "staff supervisor" or something like that. Just something the company did to avoid another lawsuit.
You want companies changing the name of things, when I worked for a GM dealership we were told we had to start calling it a cowl, it could no longer be called a firewall because some lady had a engine fire and sat in her car until she got severe burns on her feet and legs and took GM to court over the fact that the firewall didn't stop the fire. duh.
PC should stand for Protection for Complete idiots
I could almost (well, not quite) understand when the PC police eliminated Chairman, Policeman, Fireman, etc. But manager is a non gender specific term - at least according to Merriam Webster.
Main Entry: man·ag·er
Pronunciation: <TT>'ma-ni-j&r</TT>
Function: noun : one that manages : as a: a person who conducts business or household affairs b: a person whose work or profession is managementc (1) : a person who directs a team or athlete (2) : a student who in scholastic or collegiate sports supervises equipment and records under the direction of a coach
But, if you can't beat 'em, join them. I suggest we MANdate that from now on, we can no longer state that our vehicles have MANual transmissions. From hence forth, the shall be called "Operator Selected Gear Ratio Varying Device".
Man, this PC blows. Oops, I meant "person, this PC blows".
They did a study recently and found that the more PC people are the lower their I.Q.'s are in general. That seems about right to me. I think most of em are stuck in the lower double digits.
Is it all about a move to be more PC? OR... is it a way to pay people less and have less benifits? Just wondering, as manager has nothing at all to do with a specific gender.. Its usually about money..
When I ran the engineering department of a company, part of my job was to design production line tooling/fixturing. I was not allowed to make them "idiot" proof.

I am in steel fabrication, and I believe what you are saying to be true, at least in this field.
I see help wanted ads asking for welders. Qualifications: must be able to read blueprints, do layout, and fit, and of course, weld. Now most shops pay a welder a lower wage than a fitter or layout man. Not necessarily a lot less, but less. I see this as a ploy to pay a very qualified hand a lower wage, and get more from them. Most big shops have fitters, or layout/fitters, and welders. Fitters put the stuff together, using blueprints, and possibly layout skills, and the welders do nothing but weld.
So- manual labor is now 'personable' labor?
And mangoes are now 'persongoes'?
Would Charles Manson now be Charles Personson?
I'm sure that 'Manwich' will soon be off the market shelves, as well...
And lots not forget- Personoschevitz Champagne!
