To get a Class III "license" (I used quotes because it's not really a license), you must be over 21, have not been convicted of a crime that is punishable by more than 1 year jail time, fill out a Form 4, and have the CLEO (chief law enforcement officer) of your city sign it.
Send the signed Form 4, $200, 2 passport sized photo ID's, and full set of finger/palm prints to the BATFE. Then you wait anywhere from one month, to 9 months (I've heard of longer...) to hear back from the BATFE.
If you are approved...then you get together with a Class III dealer and tell him what you want.
(Full auto's are not called Class III firearms. They are called NFA. NFA = National Firearms Act of 1934. In 1934, this act went into effect, and full auto's have not been available to the general public since)
Keep in mind that the cheapest NFA you will find are the MAC-10's at around $4,000-$5,000.
Genuine UZI's are about $10K
AK47's are around $16K-$20K
Tommy Guns are around $20K
M16's are around $20K
BAR's and M60's are anywhere from $45K-$75K
Gatlin guns are anywhere from $1/4 mil. to $1/2 Mil
and they wonder why there is illegal gun trafficking? I guess common sense is something you check at the door.
Or you could get an $89 Chinese made (Norinco) AK47 knockoff and modify the sear assembly and voila! Full auto. I know someone (ahem) who had a .223 AK47 (yes they did make them) that was modified to fire auto. After realizing the trouble it could get him in, my "friend" promptly disposed of said firearm.
Anyone remember the Streetsweeper? Now that was a work of art.....
Where have you seen a $89 Ak47? The cheapest AK's I have ever seen are the single stack, low capacity's, at around $250.
And dont knock chinese guns. They are some very fine rifles (SKS, Poly-Tech AK47...)
Also...I dont think the general NFA owner could legally modify a semi automatic's trigger group to FA. But they could probably buy a FA trigger group and add it to their rifle.
Im not sure though...I will have to check on the laws.

I read this and only one thought came into my mind, your gun dealer is stroking you big time, the cost of an M16 is $586, the cost of a BAR is around $5000 mainly because of it's collector status, some perfect examples will bring up to $7500, the M60E3 has a cost of $8000, the rest I am not going to comment on because I don't want to take the time to look them up, but who ever gave you those prices is wanting to retire very early.

Oh sure... blame it on people from Mass. I believe it was you, Nitra, that brought up the Mass law to get me all fired up... Gay marriages in birth certificates and all that crup!
Monster, I'm not sure about those prices... An M16 for 500-600? Where?

I was buying them directly from the importer and in bulk but that was a while back. Got some leftover 1953 Russian made SKS with the bayonet attached for around $75.
And no, making a semi full auto without the Class 3 license is not legal. That's why my "friend" got rid of that modified .223 AK.

Thats the colt listed retail price, IE the price that the military pays for it. the outragous prices that were listed are all profit for the gun dealer, IE if your paying 20k for an M16 the gun dealer just made $19500 off of you. although that may be for the A2, I can't find a price on the new A4 version.
Looks like you have to have an FFL and then you can obtain the NFA license which is $500.00 per year. This would probably also net you visits from the BATFE to your home. A citizen cannot own any fully-automatic weapon manufactured after 1986. I want a tank to park in my front yard. Who would rob your home when they see a tank in the front yard?
Westover, I love that place... I went to college in Westfield and A-10's would be constantly flying over... We actually had a couple fly over to kick off the graduation ceremony.
Monster - 600 for a new M16 would be fantastic, but as Kepler said, can't have anything after 1986
Kepler - I remember the days when you could go down to the lake and watch people fish with M80s... What a hoot - Stupid PC
derherr - I think a tank would be freakin sweet. You'd have to make the turret motion tracking so as someone walks up the driveway, the barrel follows them.
Anyone know if, in MA, you can purchase new hi-cap magazines with an LTC-A? Or do they have to be pre-ban?

Yeah I love that little provision, or amendment. talk about an illegal amendment. It was added in the middle of the night, immediatly put to a vote, the vote failed and the Democrat that was temporarily in charge of the senate at that hour declared it passed (can't find the actual numbers right now but something like only 20 congressmen voted for it out of 435 total, somewhere I read that there was 40+ voted against it.) The man basically bypassed all rules of a democracy and frankly should be in jail. But alas since it was snuck in, and the final vote on the bill was the next morning before any of the rest of the members of congress had a chance to actually notice that it had been put in there it was voted on a final bill and passed, it wasn't until it was signed and the Dems in charge at the time started trumpeting how they got it thru that the people that passed it had a fit to late.
No it was the hughes act, put out by William Hughes (D-NJ), the presiding over congress was Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.). funny thing is the actual vote count, and who voted for and against seems to either be lost or declared top secret in the library of congress papers I can find on the internet, although several mentions of it failing and declared passed by Rangel.
