352 to a 428 engine

Hi,
I wondering if anyone could help me with a question that i'm pondering on. I've heard that the 352, 360, 390, and the 428 are all the same blocks. Is this true and if so, can you take a 352 and make it into a 428?? Or is there anything else I could do to get more power out of the 352? Let me know. Thanks.

A 428 will bolt in where the 352 is, but you can't make a 428 out of a 352.

Nate, you could but it would not be the best idea. The 352 has a 4.00 bore and the standard bore for the 428 is 4.13, that much overbore would be risky. Assuming you can even find a 428 crank the thing to do is bore your 352 050 over to std 390 bore size and make your self a 410 mercury clone. If you have your heart set on a 428, the 73-76 '105' blocks are your best choice. They were in lots of trucks running 360s and 390s. You can see the numbers in mirror image in the front of the block. I don't understand what the difference is in the 352 and 428 blocks that would allow a 428 to have a 4.13 bore and a 352 has a 4.00 bore when to my understanding the blocks are identical.

For the 352 to a 410 mercury clone, what all do you have to do and how much horsepower would that create? What crank and heads ect. would you use?

Thanks for your time. Any advice that you give will be greatly appreciated.

In brief Nate, (and this SURELY is not gospel) the 352 cylinder walls are too thin (usually) to be overbored a whole lot. The 410 Consists
of (I believe) a 360 crank mated to 390 rods and pistons giving 410 cubes. If you click over on the '67 & up message board and do "a little" searching, I think you'll find A LOT of info. (We went through this conversation in detail last winter)so the info. should still be there (the 2 message boards were combined in those days
I hope I've helped you a little.

Here is a write up of from someone who has done it.
It is good contrast to those who haven;t, yet have plenty to say about the subject.

The blocks are the same on the outside but it’s the cores that are different. The 352 has cores for a 4.00” bores, 360/390 have cores for a 4.05” bores and the 428 has cores for 4.13” bores. 352 cylinder walls are thick enough to safely take them out to standard 360/390 bore size. It’s risky to take the 360/390 out to 4.13”. That write-up was done first using a 428 block with a crack and then a bored out truck FT block. FT blocks are much beefier than FE blocks and can take usually take a big overbore, notice #4 had to be sleeved.

Just to add fuel to the fire LOL. The 352-427 FE motors all have a 32 inch long blocks. While the 428-460 motors have 30 inch long blocks.
