Hi, I've got a 64 F350 dually flatbed with a 292 and a 5 speed Clark.... I'm hoping someone can tell me something about this transmission. Is 5th gear an overdrive or just a 1:1 ratio? Are they considered a good transmission? Is there anywhere else on the net where I can get some info on it? Also, data plate on the driver's door shows 23 for the axle code... anyone know what ratio this is? Rear end is a Rockwell. Thanks in advance....
Your rear axle ratio is 5.13 with a 7200 pound rating.I need the trans code to give you more info on it. By any chance was this truck in Hemmings October issue for sale?If it is it sounds like a real nice truck!I am interested in it but it is to far away for me . I live in NJ.Any other questions please ask.I have a 1965 f-350 that I am totally restoring myself. These are some of the best trucks made in my opinion .
Check your trans code on the rating plate just before the axle code.
J= 5 sp Clark 250-v direct
K= 5 sp Clark 251-v Overdrive
Check it out and let us know. My manual doesn't cover these trannies but you can try contacting these people:

Vinney, I would guess that you most likely have 1 to 1 in fifth. There is an overdrive version as was stated, but there don't seem to be to many of them out there. I looked for an overdrive when I Purchased my Clark 280 series. I couldn't find any overdrives. I bought a 285 that has the following ratios. 1st-6.99, 2nd -4.09, 3rd -2.24, 4th -1.47 and fifth is direct. I'll bet yours are similar. You can read the tag on the side of the trans and get a code for which gears you have. Then you can call Eaton ( they bought out Clark ) and ask, then you'll know for sure. Sounds like a neat truck, most guys are stuck with 3 or 4 speeds. DF
Thanks for the replies everyone.... trans code is blank on the data plate, so guess I'll have to check the tag on the trans.... truck was in hemmings a few months ago, no takers. I'm sure this is the original trans, as the truck was bought new by my grandfather. He said it took some persuading at the dealer to get the Clark, special order..... thanks again for the help. Might try to post some pix if anyone's interested.
That trans is definitely original. If you can find the tag on it I can give you more info.I would love to see some pictures of the truck as would many of the guys on here.It says in the ad a full resto , did you do it?
Vinney, I suspect there was an upcharge for that tranny and that is what your grandpa had a problem with. There is a lot of meat in those Clarks.
You can create a gallery and post pictures there. Click just under your user name.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
found some numbers on the driver's side of the case. First is a tag that appears to be riveted to the case, U-LE-EA is all that's on it.... second is these raised numbers cast into the case, 219016. Thanks for any info you can provide.
Long story short, my grandpa owned it from new and used it in his door business, then sold it in the early 70s.... he came across it by accident in the early 90s, sitting behind a warehouse near his door shop. It had apparently been sitting there (dead) since the mid 80s.
He bought it back for $400 and we tore it down to the frame and refurbished everything, no expense was spared. There was no rust on the truck at all and only minor dings. Flatbed was shortened to 8.5 ft. A friend of his repainted the cab on a rotisserie, and we were in the process of re-assembling the truck when my grandfather died of natural causes in '99.
It sat in pieces in a garage for about a year, then I took it to my cousin who has a rod/restoration shop and he finished the assembly, adding the a/c and cruise control as well. The truck has about 20 miles on it and is sitting covered on a cement slab on my property.
It still needs small things like new aluminum hood and cab trim, door pocket trim rings, steering wheel needs to be painted, original radio needs to be installed, etc., but runs like a top..... 292 was balanced and blue printed, mild cam, t-bird valve train, electronic ignition, headers with cherry bombs.... this thing sounds mean!
I'll get some pics for the gallery, but it'll have to wait til after the holidays.... really busy right now.
BV, good luck on the pocket trim rings. Anyone want to make a couple thousand and put some jingle in your pocket? I suspect the reseller folks would scoff up that many.

Hello bigvinney, Sounds like you have a truck, that is in a class by it's self. You say a friend used a rotisserie to turn the cab to paint it. Can you tell me where he hooked on to to do this. I was thinking the striker mount, and upper and lower door hinge, on each side. Would be nice to know where he hooked to.
yeah, sorry I can't tell you exactly how the rotisserie was used.... the bare cab left the warehouse on a flatbed trailer, and came back 3 weeks later looking better than new. I believe I heard that some braces were temporarily welded/bolted from the upper door hinge to the striker area of each door opening, then the rotating assembly was attached to these to get it all spinning....
Vinny, I did not get a chance to go online last night. Sorry for the wait.I still have a couple more questions.I do not want to make a mistake.Is there a mark on the trans case like C5TA or C5TB anywhere?Is the warranty plate inside the glovebox door? We might be able to get some numbers off it.If your Grandfather bought it new is there any papers around that might have info on them.I talked to one guy who knows a lot about Clark Trans. and he seems to think it is an overdrive but I am not sold on the idea yet.I do not think you should sell the truck. It is part of your family! Just my opinion.
What color did you paint this truck? It sure sounds nice. I have a picture of a Red 64' F350 292 /w clark 5 sp and dump body I got of the net about a year ago, maybe longer.
It was for sale in Madison, WI for $10.5K
Looked really nice.
I have a 61' F350 with a dump. It's a distance looker though. Plus it only has a 223 in it with a T18/98. Has a Rockwell Rear with a 5.83 ratio. Tops out at 45 mph; 50 downhill.
