Hello, I'm new to the this truck forum , but belong to a Mustang forum, Hope Im posting this question in the correct place., but I just purchased a XL 2006 F250 SD, the tires that came on this truck are LT245/75R17 Load E. M & S . I have an 8,000 lb boat to haul, I'm looking to buy a more beefy looking tire , these tires are just way to small in the wells, I 'm wanting an ALLTRERAIN , but the tire dealer here says I have to watch my tire size for the trucks comp. may get whacked out, any advise on a larger tire size I can use , I have no added lift kit installed , everything is factory. Thanks
Just wanted to welcome you to the board. I also have a Mustang (2005 GT) But haven't looked at the Stang forums yet. My newest toy is my F250 SD. I have stock wheels and rims on mine and I like the way they look. In other posts, you will find that changing the tires size will change your final ratio and that can alter the trucks' performance and to a lesser degree, fuel economy. Take a look at some of those postings. There is some good info there.
Well I just found out and realized today that I have 17.5 in. wheels, now thats more problems to get tires, lot of sites say NEVER MOUNT 17 IN TIRES ON A 17.5 RIM. I'm Confused now ????? I have LT245/75R17 ? Says obtional tire size is LT265/70R17 ?
I have never heard of a 17 1/2 inch rim size wheel. 16's yes, 17's yes........ I think you might be referring to a 17 inch diameter rim with a 7.5 inch width. I might be wrong, but I don't think there are 17.5 inch rims. I am confused too!
If you have LT245's, you should be able to go to 265's without any problems.
Also If you find the speedo out to much you can take it to the dealer and they will recalibrate the comp to the tire size you have. This will correct your speedo and shifting. They usaully charge around $80.00 for this. They just can't go any bigger than 35" tires.
Try a 285x70R17. They are just a hair under 33" tall and 11.5" wide or so. Plus they will fit a 7.5" wide wheel.
Be aware that if you switch to this tire size, you will be switching to a 'D' rating from an 'E' rating and therefore your carrying capacity will change. with an 8000lb trailer, you should have somewhere around 1000lbs of tongue weight.
I think you can get away with the lower rating but a lot will depend on what else you have in the bed of the rtuck while you are towing.
This is not meant to discourage you from the 285x70R17 just to make you aware. I used the the same size in a Goodyear MT/R towing my travel trailer with no ill effects.
