Well here they have gone down .10, but long gone are the days of getting a gallon for less then a dollar. I bet we are all whistlin dixie on seein anything less then 2.50 for a gallon if it even gets down that low during the fall, which i'm inclined to doubt.
I heard that they are jacking the prices up for two reasons
1-The demand for diesel has gone up because the Big Three are selling alot more diesel powered trucks then before.
2-Since they are selling more diesel trucks to people who would have normally bought a gasser that gets less MPG, the oil companys have felt the loss, therefore raising the price of diesel to cancel out the effect of the more economical diesel engines.
Long story short, they have made it a wash, fuel price wise, between gas and diesel. Sure the diesel an average gets better fuel economy then a gasser of the same size, but the fuel is so much more expensive, they recover that loss.
The demand for diesel in the USA has not increased much over last year and the reserves are higher than they were last year at this time, but the National average on highway diesel price is $0.637 higher than this time last year.
Only 3% of the passenger vehicles sold in the USA are diesel powered. Most of those are light trucks like our F250's and F350's. Only 0.5% of the vehicles sold in the USA are diesel powered passenger cars like the VW Jetta TDI. Compared to back in the 1980's where over 6% of the vehicles sold in the USA were diesel.
Diesel fuel accounts for 1/3 of the fuel used in the USA, so mostly the transportaion industry buys all the diesel. Our diesel trucks have little effect on the amount used.
So whay is diesel higher? Global demand? A great profit center for oil companies? The change to ULSD? The winter heating season? How knows?
The whole diesel price thing has really gotten me down. Gas here in northern Mi. has fallen to 2.39/gal while diesel remains at 3.09/gal. I was so disgusted today when it costed me $89 to put 3/4 of a tank into my 05 F350, that I actually drove to the dealership to consider trading it in. Only then did I get the shock of the day. Apparently because of the price of diesel, "they" can't give these trucks away!!! I paid a little over $44,000 for this truck that 18 mos. later is worth $25,500.!!!! I have $10,000 in NEGATIVE equity in a truck that took me 4 mos to get in the first place because everyone wanted one!!!! Don't get me wrong, I really like the truck. But it's like throwin a hundred bucks to the gas station clerk and sayin " Have a nice day!"
When I filled up last Tuesday gas was 2.67 and diesel was 2.97. Gas has dropped some, but diesel hasn't. I don't think we will see it drop significantly until spring, and that might be too optimistic.
I've recently gone from Canada south through ND, SD, NE, KS and finally NM, never saw diesel less than $3.04 a gallon, more like $3.10 up in the states. No end in sight but I keep reading how the prices are coming down....where!
its been 3.10 to 3.20 for the past couple of months in north county san diego.but gas is cheaper ,i remember in 2000 gas for 99 cents and diesel for 84 cents, ahhh the good old days.now we all just have to pay not good for the working class.
Yesterday Diesel was $2.99 to $3.15 with the stations only a few miles apart but get this - gas was $2.59
Also remember that the heating season is coming so diesel probably won't come down very much. Since diesel fuel and heating oil use the same stock and is about the same product.
