I just received this email, thought most of you would appreciate the message.

A young teenage girl, about to finish her first year of college, considered herself a very liberal Democrat. Her father was a rather staunch Republican. One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to programs like welfare. He stopped her and asked her how she was doing in school.

She answered that she had a 4.0 GPA but it was really tough. She had to study all the time, never had time to go out and party and often went sleepless because all of the studying. She didn't have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because she was studying all the time.

He then asked how her friend Mary, who was attending the same college, was doing. She replied that she was barely getting by. She had a 2.0 GPA, but never studied, was very popular on campus and was at parties all the time. She often wouldn't show up for classes because she was hung over.

He then asked his daughter why she didn't go to the Dean's office and ask why she couldn't take 1 point off her 4.0 and give it to her friend that only had a 2.0. That way they would both have a 3.0 GPA.

She fired back and said, "That wouldn't be fair, I worked really hard for mine and my friend has done nothing." After a moment of silence, she replied, "I guess I will never vote Democrat again."

I'm not against giving assistance to those who TRULY need it. But I am adamantly opposed to giving assistance to those who are just too lazy to go out and get a job.
So, as they say, before we debate let us first define terms.
Conservative Republican and durn proud of it!

rikfish, great post! Sure it doesn't apply to everyone and some do actually benfit from some assistance, but the programs are so corrupted and so many people are lazy and just milk it.

The government should have NO part in handeling welfare programs. It should be churches, local communities, and neighbor-helping-neighbor to take care of those in need. That way, we can see who or where our money is going to and decide for ourselves if that person or family is really in need; and help them get back on track to fend for themselves--and possibly, return the favor.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Dec-02 AT 11:10 PM (EST)]Most Americans don't vote because:

1) They feel their vote will not make a difference.

2) They feel they are already screwed (by politics).

3) They have their life to live and don't have time to stay on top of the whole left vs right.

Mudslinging in the intial post????? Horse manure.

You may have taken the course but you failed to understand it.

The two party political system we have is too polarizing, as there are few truly 'liberal Democrats' and 'staunch Republicans'. They are the squeaky wheels that bitch and moan about everything. Most people lie somewhere in between but partisan pissing matches between the extremists that call the shots for these parties leave them disgruntled. There needs to be a third or perhaps even fourth party in American politics to cover more views. For instance for which party would a person vote that takes conservative economic views but liberal social views, like me? How am I supposed to vote? If I vote for a Democrat are you gonna tell me I'm unpatriotic, some immoral pot smoker, to go hug a tree, take your socialist crap to canada, blah blah blah?

It's the whole left vs. right, black and white, us against them militants that drive Americans away from the polls.

Funny, I never implied any of that in my post.

I have several problems with the DNC, but none of the reasons you have stated is the reason why I will not vote for them.

I would offer that the DNC has done a outstanding job of polarizing this nation. And in fact, polarizing is just what the doctor ordered.

A third or fourth party??? Now there I might accuse you of smoking the wrong substance. It will only splinter this country even further. What? Do you want us to end up like Europe?

So you feel that about half of the TWO MILLION immigrants that Clinton brought into this country during his last two years in office would vote Republican/conservative?
It would be even?

Corlucci, you hit the nail right on the head. I'm a registered Democrat and I'm certainly not proud of some of the things they've done over the years (Clinton's the biggest disappointment of my life), but to blame EVERY SINGLE THING that goes wrong in this country on Democrats is absolutely childish. Right-wingers love to blame all this country's problems on people who get welfare. Well, let's consider a few facts:

1) There are fewer people on welfare today than there were 20 years ago.

2) When the Pentagon pays $250 for a hammer, isn't that welfare for the rich? Both parties favor some sort of welfare; the Republicans favor a form that insures they get plenty of campaign contributions from their rich friends. These rich friends tend to own If you want to get people off of welfare that don't deserve it, then you want to eliminate WASTE. There is no more wasteful agency in our government than the defense dept. It's a lot harder to say that since 9/11/01, but it's still the truth; ask anyone in the military! And yet, we actually have some of our armed services members on FOOD STAMPS because the military doesn't pay them enough to feed their families! Don't believe me? Ask any of the grocery stores around army bases, especially those in southern CA. This has got to be one of the biggest disgraces in our country today, but I don't here ol' Rash Limbo trying to do anything about it. He'd rather just complain about Clinton. I have no idea why, the guy's been out of office for TWO YEARS!!!

People for the most part are moderates, both politically and socially. I wish our politicians would wake up to that fact, but when the ultra-right-wing start screaming from their soapbox, then the ultra-left-wing liberals are going to scream just as loud to get their "equal time." If the Democrats would go back to their roots and re-discover leaders like Harry Truman, they might actually be able to accomplish something. Until then, I just vote for people that run on the People's Workers or Socialist Party- I figure my vote doesn't count anymore, and I know it drives the little old ladies in my small town CRAZY trying to figure out who the "commie" is among them...

Have you ever worked for a government contractor? The incredible beauracracy that was been built into supplying a product to the government is beyond belief. I worked for a company some years ago, we made power diodes for a government supplier. I dealt with the Mil-Std auditors. The amount of paperwork required to document the production of these devices drove the cost of a part you could buy at Radio Shack for around $1 or $2, to ridiculous levels. We certainly didn't make a potload of money. It wasn't welfare for the rich! We were lucky to make a minimal profit. Things have improved greatly in recent years, with the Government finally cutting back on using only 'qualified' vendors, and going with commercially available like parts of equal quality.
