I was driving my truck today and I looked down at the dash and the OD OFF light was flashing at me. I was only doing about 40MPH, but I was coming up on a jump to 70mph. There was no problem shifting into overdrive, but the light kept flashing until I turned the truck off. Hasn't come back on since (I haven't pressed the button to turn the OD off, which is another reason why it has not come back on again).
Check my sig to see what truck I have if you can help.
I don't know much about auto trannys, but from what I've seen here on FTE, when the OD OFF light flashes, it means that there is a trouble code that is being stored, like when the Check Engine light comes on. I don't know if is a code that can be pulled anywhere, or if you need to go to the dealer. If you're a gambler, you could just ignore it unless it happens again, but if it was my truck I'd want to know what set it off.
Won't know until you turn the OD on again will you? May be just a freak occurance or maybe something with the 4x4 package. Does it go into 4x mode smoothly?
Everything operates smoothly, tranny, t-case, it's just the light was flashing. Turns out it also happened to my wife the other day, yet she neglected to mention that to me. But I'm always at highway speeds, so I'm always using the OD. Maybe it was a freak occurance.
Loose wires possibly, maybe some kind of sending unit that tells you when OD is engaged? I'd hate to think that would happen to such a new truck, but my oil pressure sending unit failed at 10k so things happen
Bummer... I think this is the last time I buy used. I'm not badmouthing the Ranger, but I am badmouthing first owners who think they need to rag on a truck and trade it in. I'll check it out and keep you posted. Thanks for your help.
Well, I was going to make a post on this subject but I searched and found this thread. My O/D light has been coming on also. The O/D works fine but I have noticed some hard shifting into second gear and some eratic downshifts when I pass. After shutting off the truck the light goes off and does not always come back on. Fluid level is fine and seems to pull the truck fine. I am suspecting a vacuum leak but haven't found one yet. I have an 01' ranger 4X4 edge ext. cab with 4.0 engine and 5 speed tranny.
Big Dave, seeing as how this puppy is likely still under warranty, believe I'd at least have the Dealer check it out & get it on the record. It's likely to have set a trouble code, so they should be able to find something when they scan the drivetrain computer.
That's the catch, This didn't happen until a few weeks ago and my warranty expired about 3 months ago.
Also, dogbrdr, the reason why second gear shift is so hard is because the 5r55E makes 2nd gear by combining 1st and OD. So OD problems also cause 2nd gear problems.
That makes so much sense now. I have a hard shift into second as well, sometimes. If I baby it, it shifts fine. If I push a little harder, it shifts rough.
As for the flashing OD off light, I noticed the same thing on mine, but it only does it when the fluid is cold. So I don't turn the OD off until the tranny is up to operating temp.
Still doesn't solve the problem, but at least I don't have a flashing light.
Sounds like it might be a common problem. Anyone here actually have theirs fixed? I was talking to a shop today and they mentioned the speed sensor. They are changing the oil tomorrow so I'll have them look for loose wires or hoses, anything that don't look right.
I think I have seen on other posts in here before about a problem with the wheel speed sensor on the rear end making th O/D light flash. If thats it, I don't think the sensor is expensive or hard to replace.

Mine is the opposite. If I go real easy, the shift is rough and delayed. If I hammer it down (even just a little), it shifts nice and smooth.
The od light is flashing you a trouble code you can figure out the code by the flashes and there is a published list of these codes it will give you a clue as to what is going on. The problem is there are not very many cheap fixes for these Trannies.
