Neone fish for reds? Whatyall use? My buddy jus got a boat and i wanna go out fishin but im not much on the saltwater fishin, more of a bassman myself. Any help would b great.
Oooooooooh......You're gonna have FUN!!!....I'm getting ready to hit Portsmouth Island on the Outer Banks of NC for some "red" fishing.......Several things work.......The best would be live bait......3" or 4" finger mullet works great, or even small pinfish (with the tips of the spine snipped)........If you can get live fiddler crabs, that works good.....If not, large, fat egg-laden sand fleas (tiny crustaceans that get washed up on the beach) work. Also, as a good substitute for live bait, me and my brother had great success last year with the reds by putting on nice, fresh chunks of cut bait from mullet, small croakers, etc......the fresher, the better. Some guys have luck with shrimp. I've caught a few with squid, but basically try live small fish, then fresh cut bait......
Sounds like you're boat fishing, so you're probably hitting the bays and inlets.....Most of my experience is on the sand or waist deep in the water in the "sound", but cuts and channels on the rising and falling tide are usually the best for the "reds"........
Yah ill be boat fishing, Maybe some surf too, depends on where the rods are bendin! Yah the canal by the house is full of mullet and croakers so all i have to do is through the cast net out n pull er up. This is my first time fishing in saltwater that isnt in the pacific ocean, and stuff is a lott different out there then it is here on the gulf so im kinda nervous. My buddy has seen a few reds in the canal's "Tailing" but only in the early morning/late evening. If I dont catch ne reds, im sure well get som blacktips on the lines, when im surfing thats all the guys are catching with croakers! You ever use skitterwalks/ poppers?? I hear they work good when its glassy, and glassy it is! THanks for your help I appreciate it!
Never tried the reds with topwater lures....but if they're "tailing" like you said, then that might be a good thing to try. Out here, our best red-fishing on the outer banks is September through early November. Right now, only the "puppies" (younger reds) are biting, but the adults will be coming back in within a couple of weeks. Regarding the cast net, that's why I bring my brother along (haha)....he's a pro with it, and the jumping mullet and croakers....4" to 6" are plentiful that time of year for live and fresh cut bait. Have a good time and good luck.
