intergraded brake controler

was the intergraded trailer brake controler avalible in the 04 F250? What year did they start? If the 01 had it offered and the truck didn't have it would the wire harness be under the dash so I can just buy the control head. Thanks

I don't believe the '01's had an integrated brake control option, but I could be wrong. The current integrated brake controllers became an option in '05. Unfortunately, it's not recommended to try and add that controller if it wasn't installed at the factory. This is because, among a couple of other things, the brake controller equipped trucks have a different master cylinder.

I have also been told that the integrated brake controller is integrated through the truck's computer as well. It also works with the antilock brake system to pulsate the trailer brakes in conjunction with the rear axle of the tow vehicle. VERY VERY expensive to convert to this system.
My recommendation is if you don't want to buy an 05 with the system in place, then I would go with the after market Prodegy brake control system. I think they are the next best thing.

Truck's that came with the towing package, included the wiring harness (usually found in a plastic bag in the glove box) and the plug under the dash. But this was only for hooking-up an aftermarket brake controller, not the integrated controller that the '05+ SD's can get as a factory option. Which, from what I've heard, is an excellent unit. I use the Prodigy that olford mentioned and think it's great, but I've been told by more than a couple of former Prodigy users that bought SD's with the Tow Boss package that Fords controller works much better. I was a bit bummed when I learned that the Ford controller isn't backward compatible.
