Green Air Filter Replacement

Yesterday, I installed a #2455 Green Air Filter I on my 2003 - 6.0 with 37,000 miles. For future reference, I wanted to know the manufacturer's recommendation on cleaning the filter so I called Green at 1-724-430-2050. They told me this model had some problems with the seal after about one year and they offered to send me a new and improved #7455 for free. They also said they would send me a cleaning kit, gratis. Seemed like nice and honorable folks. Has anyone had direct experience using a Green Air Filter on a 6.0? Is there any comparison test of the Green Air filter versus stock and other aftermarket filters. Thanks!

What exactly is a GREEN air filter? Inquiring minds want to know! I'm convinced the stock Donaldson setup can't be beat for flow and filtration. If you toast your turbo from ingesting too much grit you might have a warranty problem. The stock unit is easy to change if you take out the whole housing and then replace the filter, took me 15 minutes last time.

I wouldn't use the green filter even if they gave it to me. The stock filter is your best bet. The seal on these filters is what keeps out unfiltered air and I've seen some of the green filters not seal . If you take it in for warranty work and it has a green filter in it they MAY not warranty the work.

Green Air filter

A Green Air Filter is an aftermarket air filter manufactured by Green High Performance Air filters and has been quite popular in Europe and in high performance and racing circles. Construction wise, it is similar to the K&N type filter except of course it is green. I was attracted to it because it could be mounted in the existing air filter arrangement and there was no need to buy an expensive air box add-on. Apparantly there has been a sealing problem over time and that is why they are replacing mine.

I suppose folks will be debating the reliability of stock versus aftermarket filters forever. I do know that in our 1993 Jeep 5.2 liter, we have used a K&N drop in filter for the last 140K miles and at 160K, it runs great. I did notice I seemed to get a little more power off the line and it got a little better gas mileage. In those total miles, we towed a 6,000 lbs. trailer for 45K miles.

Green has a website at www.greenfilterusa.com. I think if I have turbo problems again and have to take the truck to the dealer, I'll probably break down and buy a Ford filter so they can't blame the problem on me. All in all, the Ford dealers have been very accomodating but the 2003 6.0 has spent more time at the dealer than any other vehicle we have owned. And that includes British cars!

More On The Green Air Filter Saga

I received the replacement Green Air Filter the other day. Also included was a Limited Warranty document which set forth the particulars of the warranty. This document was not included with the original filter. The following are the last two paragraphs of the warranty.

"The replacement of the filter shall be the sole and exclusive remedy to which Green Filter USA is obligated and to which the original retail purchaser is entitled. Green filter USA shall not be liable for any consequential or incidental damages of any kind resulting from the order or use of its products. These damages include but are not limited to reimbursement of the original purchase price, and any other special, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages.

Any defective Green Air Filter properly returned to the factory will be replaced for a handling charge of $14.95. Green Filter USA will not be responsible for any costs incurred in making the warranty claim. Any warranty claim must be sent at customers' expense along with proof of purchase. Green Filter USA reserves the right to determine if all terms of warranty have been met. Green Filter USA shall be under no obligation to honor this warranty." (emphasis added)

I placed a call to the CEO of Green Filter USA to get clarification on the intent of the warranty and left a voice mail for him. He did not call back. Given Green's warranty and failure to respond, I concluded I couldn't take the risk of having their product in my truck which has 2 years left on the Ford factory warranty. I ordered a new Donaldson filter last night. I suspect Green filter USA is an independent US distributor of Green Filters and is not a subsidiary of the manufacturer.

Thank you for your honest follow-up and post above. You tried it, followed up and made a decision. Many that try mods do not like to admit making a mistake or posting it.

Hopefully, your first hand dealing with this company will assit others in either not trying this "green filter" or at least making an informed decision on their own.

The stock filter (blude synthetic media) is generally good for 40,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions.

Enjoy...
