I am going to have to do something abuot my steering box. I though i might rebuild it but dont know if i can? Any suggestions? Also I know i would have to be in the box to see what all i need but also any suggestions there? Lastely anyone know of a place i can send the box of too to be rebuilt? thanks I am getting tired of bad steering. I have a drag link kit to put on and Am probley looking into king pins too if anyone has any suggestions. thanks
Mid Fifty sells rebuild kits and rebuilt boxes, but both are rather pricey. I don't know what your plans for the truck are but if you are keeping the beam axle and would like power steering I'd suggest doing the Toyota PS box swap. see: https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...60_Trucks.html the total cost is likely to be less than the rebuild kit for the OEM box and it works OH SO SWEET!
for the most part the truck is stock. If not it could be sooner than not. I dont have to big a problem with manual steering if it works right. I want to know if this is something i can do or if i have to send it off. Anyone rebuilt theres? and can offer insite? As for power I am not shure. I would have to talk to dad and get his oppion. I could see it costing alot to add power steering as a kit is kind of expensive and then finding a box. But the major expense would be in power steering pump and bracket for my 292 with a 239 water pump and housing . thanks
My box was 75.00, the pump 30.00 you're on your own on the brackets but it's not that difficult to adapt some to work. The OEM box is really pretty simple inside so it's not hard to rebuild it, it's the 270.00 for the parts to still have armstrong steering that's difficult to handle.
AX- I have '79 F-150 engine, steering column, pump, and box. The pump is a roundish, bulbuous, unsightly thing, and the box is rather bulky. Everything works great, but I am interested in streamlining under the hood. ('55) Is the Toyota pump as diminuitive as the box? Scale of 1-10; how difficult is this conv. for the "average" owner? I am a decent mechanic. Thanx, Jim

I may have given the wrong impression, I did not use the Toyota pump, I used a Saginaw pump with my CSB engine since it came with the truck and I could use factory bracketry. The Saginaw pumps are relatively small smooth pumpkin seed shaped units with built in rez you can see it (barely under the mishmash of bracketry the PO cobbled together) in my "making changes" gallery 3rd last picture. It's not much larger than the pulley. I have not seen a Toyota pump myself other than the one on our Celica, but I do understand they are pretty small. You can use about any PS pump other than a high pressure unit. The saginaws are plentiful (used by GM, Chry and some Fords) easily mounted and cheap and use the same size pressure hose fitting as Toyota so it also makes plumbing easy. The steeringbox conversion couldn't be easier, it's all bolt in and all the parts are available as a kit from Mid Fifty. See the article Fergy and I wrote on the installation I linked to in post #2. It's an easy long afternoon job.
Thanks Chuck. I am familiar with that pump. Can hardly see it behind your bracket; that's what I'm looking for. I read you and fergie's article with great interest. I'll be at the junk, errr,, SALVAGE yard this weekend, perhaps.. LOL Congrats on your 4000th post! BTW, I thought I had the only chrome glove box door across the fruited plain..
DMAN! didn't even see that 4K posts. All that stupid bracketry is now gone. There was already a nice chrome bracket installed beneath with a built in belt tensioning adjustment. Only reason I could find for all that mess was to tighten the fan belt tighter. I put a 1" shorter belt on it instead... DUH!
Sorry to dissappoint, but if you look at some of the other pictures the glove box and ashtray has been blanked off, so you ARE the only one with a chrome door on yours. (Unless I find a buyer for mine along with that useless 1" deep box that was behind it.)
cbfomoko - I just finished rebuilding the stock box on my 52 and it was a pretty simple job. I lucked out in that the worm and sector gears and the sector shaft were in great condition so I was able to reuse them. I just replaced the sector shaft bushings, upper and lower bearings and races, new gaskets and adjusted everything as per the shop manual. Probably cost me about $70.00 for all of the parts. I think it would at least be worth opening the box up to see what the gears look like. If the gears are trashed the cost to rebuild will go up..., then you may want to look at other options.
