When I look up parts for a 97 or 98 F250HD or 350 it shows possible engines as 4.9, 5.8, 7.5 or 7.3. Possibly these are just extra 96's that they put on the lot?

I'm curious, where? I just looked in Parts America and O'Rielly for 97 F250 and they both start with 4.6 Tritons, no 6's at all.
Correction. In the Super Cab 250's it appears that the 4.2 Essex V-6 was available.
From our parts supplier at work. That is probably the ******* step child F250 with 7 lug wheels that was the same body style as the 97 F-150 that you found. You have to look up the HD250 or a 350.
I have not had any problem with the tranny itself. I blew a slave cylinder (not cause of the tires/gears/lift) and I am soon to need a new clutch. I thought that the tranny itself would have been weak, but I have not had any issues with it yet (knock on wood). I will drive it until it calves, then throw the ZF5 in there since I know that is a tougher tranny. My truck is a daily driver with some offroad / mud / hunting / tree pulling use, so I am not hardcore by any means, but even I can see the limits in this tranny when I am crawling up hills.
As for the rear, it is a 8.8 and the front is a Dana 44 hi-pinion (reverse rotation or reverse cut, what ever you want to call it). I got my gears (Yukon Gears) from Randy's Ring and Pinion for a great deal - ring, pinion, and master install for both diffs for just under $500 us, then shipping and all that good stuff.
