If it were the ball joints I think it would make this noise all the time wouldn't it? Somehow I'm doubting this is the problem. He said it was a thump that was more rapid at higher speed correct? This would have little to do with the ball joints.
The point I was getting at by you trying different things was to see if it was engine related or not. I guess unless I'm there to test it myself I may never know...
mr handyman, don't give up yet...as my previous post says, i tried the OD button, sounds the same...gotta get my nerve up to do the neutral thing. i'm not putting too much faith in the safety switch that stops it from slipping to R. its not a sound that comes under stress that's what confuses me. its with foot off the gas, coasting, or very lightly on but not acceleration. idling is fine as well. leading me to believe that its diffy/drvshaft turning the tranny somehow.
the ball joint thing sounded possible cause at highway speeds there is a bit of a shimmy, they need done, and the front is famous for going out of balance...
One thing you may check is the driveshaft. I replaced my U-Joints a year ago and the truck has been still vibrating way more than it should to the point of braking my transmission mount. I didn't know what it could be then tonight my rear U- joint broke again. While I was replacing it I noticed that my driveshaft wouldn't slide back and forth on the Yoke side of the shaft. I pulled back the rubber boot and both parts of the driveshaft were soild.
The driveshaft needs to be able to side back and forth with the suspension of the truck. It might be worth checking out.
and when you let of the gas it made a "chuckle chuckle chuckle" noise as the truck coasted down. Pulled the diff cover and the spider gears were worn about 1/3 through. I jacked up a rear wheel, after chocking the front wheels of course, put the trans in netural and I could shake the drive shaft where the pinion bearing was worn and sloppy........I have an 8.8 rear end..chris3
Wow, ball joints knocking while slowing down, thats a new one for me.
I was going to suggest the pinnion gear moveing in and out, mine makes a funny sound ilke that. My pinion moves about 1/8th to 3/8's of an inch.
Not sure if thats good or not.
I got another thunk sound like that too from my exhaust hitting my transfercase.

If the pinion moves in and out that far, you've got problems. The bearings are probably shot. That's not going to be cheap to fix whenever the bearings finally go. Start saving up for a new rear end, or a rebuild.
and the complete rear end swap cost me 1079 bucks. Truck sure is quiet now. I can hear the radio. The trans and rear end have been making noise since I bought the truck in 2000. I just thought it was the way noises were in that truck. Just like new now with new clutch/press plate, trans, and rear end. chris3
Had the same hollow knocking sound when decelerating. Mainly from 35 down to 25 mph. Thought it was a bad carrier bearing. Problem got worse every day until the rear differential locked.
