Most machine shops buy engine core parts all the time and have several suppliers. Your machine shop should be able to supply a 400 crank.

Check the info & pictures here:

thanks for the info. the crank out of the engine has a 1k stamped on it. from my investigation, that should mean a 351m. i have a local machine shop in mind, but i have not checked with them yet.

i went and did some more investigating and discovered that the 1k on my crank should place it in the 1975-1976 era. apperently there is also a 1ka stamped on the later versions. this engine came out of a 1981 f-350. i at least know that is a fact because i saw the truck with my own eyes. so, do i need to start from scratch or would i still be able to use the rods and find a 400 crank and pistons?

you'll want a fresh set of pistons, not some old slugs that have been out in the yard for too long. if you haven't seen his site yet, look over Tim Meyer inc's pages. he's doing great things for the 400 while everyone else is still saying "junk it". lots of good info, and he has his own line of pistons that correct the problem of the stock and replacement slugs. here is a link from an ealier thread on ID'ing the crank, http://www.tmeyerinc.com/400crankshaftid.html

here's a thread on the pistons,
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ns-are-in.html

if i were building a 400 the$e pi$ton$ are the only way to go for $everal rea$on$ if you know what i mean?
