I have found a tilt column from a '79 Bronco that I am pondering buying. I noticed that the Bronco column attaches via a u-joint type setup to the Bronco 4x4 steering. Is there any way to attach this Bronco column to my (non-bendix) '66 Power Steering truck using the regular rag joint method? Another non-tilt '79 pickup in the same junkyard shows the same lower column end, but with a regular type steering shaft attaching to the rag joint. ALSO are the splines the same on the tilt column as on the regular ones? I would like to use my stock steering wheel. All comments would be welcome. The
non-cruise tilt column can be mine for $ 60 but wouldn't be worth anything if I can't use it in my truck!
60 dollars is cheap. they regualarly bring 150. i also am installing a tilt wheel in a 66 and the rag joint will work with no problem. i found a tilt column on ebay with a factory rally wheel and paid about 200. i am very happy with the rally wheel appearance. i don't know about using the factory wheel with the tilt column however. i am sure someone on here has done it or tried it. i just started removing a 70 429 that was installed in a 79 f250 supercab. it has a tilt column with cruise control. tomorrow i will finish removing the engine and then the tilt column and the cruise control stuff so i have an extra tilt column with cruise. good luck with your project. jim.
I have a couple of tilts that I am making ready for my trucks. First you won't be able to use the 66 vintage wheel on that column the mating plates just under the wheel are very different. The 66 era is much smaller. I don't much about 4X4 columns (their lengths how they connect differently) but I imigine it wouldn't take mucj to make it work. I had an incomplete tilt from a 78 F150 and was able to get one from a van and cut 6 1/2" out of the shaft and use it in the 150 column to make it work. Hope you can make yours work.
