Had my instrument panel out the other day, so decided to change out the bulbs. Come to find out the brake warning bulb, and the rear antilock bulb were not even installed. I put in new bulbs, and now when I start the vehicle, the lights go out, and then come back on and stay on (brake warning and antilock). I changed the antilock sensor in the rear end, but no help. Anyone had this problem? What should I do next? I have an 89 BII. I am assuming the two are related in some way. Thanks.
a lot of times it's caused the the emergency brake pedal..it goes up but still rests on the sensor for the brake light..try pulling the brake handle and lifting the pedal up more while the light is on and see if it goes off.
Now you know why the bulbs were missing. A previous owner had to have done that otherwise they would have had problems selling or trading the truck.
The ABS light automatically is turned on if there is a fault that turns on the BRAKE light.
Common sources of the BRAKE light are the parking brake switch, the reservoir level float switch, or the ABS module itself. Disconnect each in turn and see if the BRAKE light goes off when one is unplugged.

Agree on the bulbs missing. That was 5 years ago. Imagine that. Anyway; when I apply the parking brake, the brake warning light gets brighter. If I disconnect the plug on the master cylinder the red brake warning light goes out, and works with the parking brake; however, the antilock light is still on. I guess it is pointing to the ABS Module. Do you know where it is located? Thanks...
My '89 B2 had that happen before. For me, all it turned out to be was the wheel cylinders were bad. When I replaced both, the lights went off.
If I were you I would replace the cylinders since they are cheap. If that's not the problem, you'll at least have 2 new parts on the braking system at a low cost.

Brakes are all new. Wheel cylinders, shoes, spring kit, adjusters, within the last month. Any location on the ABS module? Looks like it might be under the dash, but my manual isn't very clear as to the location. Any other options? Thanks..

Good question about the module location. The manual I have is an old Chiltons which is nothing compared to the Haynes of course. Since you've replaced all rear brake parts and still get the light then it should be the ABS module. Good luck since this is the best I could help with.
Rear Anti-lock brackes System (RABS) 1987 and later models
The RABS module on the 89 is under the dash on a dash brace, two nuts kiddy corner from each other with the connecter at the lower end below one attaching nut.
The RABS valve is inside the frame rail just foward of the driver side rear wheel.
The computer and diagnostic lead is behind the drivers door pillar (the jack is in the same location on the other side of the car) in the lift out access panel.
I can email pictures if you like, message me through this forum. I can not post attachments.
