Well my motor finally went or least the lower gaskets. Has anyone had any luck with swapping in a junk yard motor after they replace all the gaskets. I can get one for about 400 that has good compression and doesn't smoke. Just doing the gaskets in mine wont work because the rings and heads need reworking. Just wondering if anyone has done this also how much of a pain would it be to paint it so it doesn't look like a rusty mess once it’s in the truck? I am also wondering the part name of the o-ring on the oil filter adapter. I asked about it at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">Napa</st1lace></st1:City> and the guy looked at me like I was the craziest kid he had ever seen. If I wind up doing this I am planning on doing a full gasket set and new timing set. The motor I am looking at only has 90k on it and doesn't smoke the j-yard is also willing to give me 90 days warranty on it. Also can the valve seals cause it to smoke and use oil?
which engine do you have? the 2.8 or 2.9?valve seals can cause an engine to smoke.usually at start up. the only thing about a j-yard engine is you don't know what it has been through as far as oil changes, and how long it has sat without running. if it's only $400 it might be worth the try, especially if you heard the engine run. painting the engine is no big deal, put all new gaskets and timing set, thenclean and paint it good.hope this helps and let us know how it works out!
I have the 2.8 my mechanic friend who is going to be helping me installing is friends with the j-yard owner and talked him into letting me have it for 250. The story according my mechanic friend who saw it says the truck it is in was in near perfect shape till it was rolled so I am hoping maybe I get lucky and so was the motor. Also would it be a wise idea to put a new oil pump in it before throwing it in the truck?
while the engine is out and since you are changing the pan gasket,i would go ahead and do it.might save alot of time and aggravation later. check the rear main seal while your at it too
