IM not really sure. How do dealerships usually charge for diagnosis? Do they just charge for an hour or do they normally charge for the actuall time it took them to diagnose?
Another question, do you think that a dealership should still be able to charge for their diagnosis if they werent able to diagnos the problem?
Think of it from a dealer tech point of view, how about the ones that want you to diagnose it so they can fix it themselves? Are there incompetent people out there? Sure, but remember, there is also dealerships out there like mine that there is no such thing as "cant find the problem".
Many moons ago, I made a deal with a Chebbie dealer. We had a 95 G20 cargo van that was having some transmission/emissions/injection issue that we could not identify. I'd been to several mechanics and did all I could to chase the problem down. Never did find it. I took it to Chebbie and told them that I would not pay them to tell me that they didn't know what it was either. Circumstances were such that we only used that vehicle on Saturdays, so they could have the thing for the week. If they could find it, they could fix it, and I'd happily pay them for it. If they couldn't find it, I needed the van back together and ready to roll on Friday night, but promised I'd bring it back on Sunday night so that they could keep looking.
For three weeks!!!!! They never did find the problem. Van never did shift right. Last I heard, it was sitting by the side of my ex's house dying in the weeds.
Sorry, got a little long. The point here is that there are mechanics out there that are up to the challenge. Just be clear when you take in the vehicle.
