I'm no expert on the M motors, but I think you will be disappointed in the performace, especially as a higher reving application is required. One other concern I would look at is will the oil pan clear your cross-member. What did the motor come out of?
With the Ford motors typically being front sump, or at least front pump location, and most GM's being rear sump/pump location, especially the Camaro's, you will about have to rebuild the frame stub just to put almost ANY Ford motor into it.
The 77-79 4x4 and all 80-82 truck pans were rear sump, but that engine has a really tall deck height, and the factory cam isn't good for high rpms. The 351 is more tolerant of running higher compression than the 400, but still, it isn't a 400. Not to mention that that engine weighs as much as if not more than a 454, and doesn't put out anywhere near the same power. It will put you in the big block or even the modified class, since it is a non-standard engine, and you will be running against some much more powerful cars. If I were to put any engine in there, I would start with a 302 or maybe a 351w, use the 80's truck pan for the rear sump, and have a much lighter engine with more power that is a lot happier at higher rpms.
Uhh, it's a Chevalay....don't they make a 350 that you can turn into a 383 without much trouble, or a 400 if you find one, or a 427 if'ns you hit the lotto?
If the 351 M that you already have won't work, why go in search of yet another Ford motor to struggle with in your Cam-a-roo?
how bout sell the ford engine and use the money to get a chevy engine of whatever size your heart desires? I would love to see a dirt car running a ford motor, not many do around here, but if the car you race is a chevy,it would be less of a chore to just run a chevy motor.
