Hi. I am a noob here. I have owned trucks my whole life but have found myself with a 00 mustang GT vert. It has full bolt ons (75 mm Throttle body & Upper intake, CAI, Long tube headers, off road x pipe, dual cat back exhaust, underdrive pullies, diablo tuner, short throw shifter, eibach suspension, granatelli upper and lower control arms, weld in sub frame connectors, 4.10 gears, and the list goes on) and as you can see im a power freak. But i do live in the mountains of colorado and am a 4x4 truck boy by heart. I am looking to get rid of the stang and get a f-250 extended cab short bed v-10 auto. I dont want a Powerstroke becuase the gas $$$ is too much and i have gotten used to Ford Mod motors. Ive always had my eye on the big v-10 and have decided to go with it. The only power adders i could find online for the 6.8 so far are cold air intakes, headers & exhaust, superchargers, and chips. Im already looking at all of those (vortech s/c). What else is out there? Does the dual exhaust work like true duals with headers, x/h pipe and cat back or does it go through a y pipe and then back out to two again? Im sure many have asked these questions before but i want to be making some serious power. Ive gotten used to the hp in my 4.6 stang but as we all know the 4.6 are far short on torque.
The TB for the DOHC 4.6 works on the V10. Exhaust is a big toss up. Dual will be through a "y" pipe and split after the muffler. Tuners IMO are not enough bang for the buck. K&N and other kits get mixed reviews.
The biggest thing if you are looking for pure acceleration, get a truck with 4.30s. 4.30s are the ticket. If you get anything else you will be disappointed and will be swapping later on. Gears are the biggest bang for the buck with these trucks. The next would be a twin screw SC from someone like Kenne Bell or Whipple.
POWER ADDERS : S/C- whipple, kenne belle (best for the V10) chips-BANKS Otto mind, and SCT 4 or 5 position programable chip Exhaust- stay away from "true duals" don't sound that good and you get more power w/ a y into single. check out some of my sound clips TEAM MUDD SOUND CLIPS! mufflers, and CAT choice also have an impact! Gear Choice- i chose 4.56's to run 39.5's w/ all my mods (TEAM MUDD MODS!) but chose the right set for your application the first time, so you woun't have to re-gear in the long run!
and there are some minor things that add up in the long run:
cold air intake
TB spacer
Accufab eliptical TB
i'm sure there might be some more out there for the BIG 10er but i belive i've hit the most popular!
So it sounds like the same is true with you guys as is with me and my mustang. The biggest power adders come from a gear swap and a s/c. So you said the same t/b from a 4.6 can work on a 6.8? Does that mean my ported 75 mm will work on the v-10? How big is the v-10's TB stock. I know on a 4.6 its 65 mm. I listened to those sound clips and man you just cant immitate that sound of a V-10!! I liked the flowmasters alot. I used to own a 95 chevy 2500 4x4 with a 3" lift and 33's that i dropped a crate 350 in and did headers, cams, manifold, 4 barrell throttle body. I was pushing out 390 hp and 485 trq at the wheels and i did the whole headers, high flow Y pipe and then back to duals that came out on one side so im familiar with the set up. I guess its just not worth the time and effort to do true duals. This truck isnt gonna be a street rod its gonna be my toy but going from a high 12/low 13 second mustang itll be nice to every now and then stomp on it and get it to smoke those tires. Ive been looking at the kenne bell package too but i guess my best bet is a twin screw which is the same for the 4.6's in the stangs. I hear about guys getting into the 12's with superchargers and custom port and polish and all that stuff on their v-10's so thats pretty wild. Alright let me see so dont get anything less than 4.30's for gears on the v-10? Ive got 4.10's in my stang and that REALLY woke it up so im up for a gear swap. Well its a lot of info to take in put ill keep you guys posted. I just started training for firefighting so once i start that job ill be able to afford to get this truck and all the good stuff to go with it. Thanks for all your help guys!

Jason, thanks for the sound clips, what a difference headers can make ! My favorite was; Banks headers and y-pipe to a 3 inch highflow Magnaflow cat to a 3 inch Dynomax race bullet (small one) then to a side exit before the right rear tire twin 3 inch stainless tip on the 2001 V10 SD. Excellent sound, very throaty and deep. I saved your site BTW, although I gotta disagree with the TB spacer, thanks again, Ken

yea buddy, gears, gears, gears, in this much truck gears are like having a s/c. My wife's 185 hp DOHC V6 Suzuki XL-7 will flat smoke most cars out of a light. She's got 5.13 gears in that little dude and 3800 pounds. It is #1 for performance mods, plus it puts that V10's rpm's right where you want them for towing and cruising. You know them mod motors like to rev, the 6.8 is no exception. Good luck and welcome ! Ken
ok, to elaborate alittle more on some mods..........
THROTTLE BODY
- the 75mm won't work unless it's a twin port
- the stock tb flows 1050 on a stock V10
- the accufab tb has 2 you can choose from, one is for S/C applications, here's the link: ACCUFAB TB
TB SPACER
-not a GIANT power adder, BUT i did notice a slight increase in throttle responce, like i said slight! and i found mine on e-bay for $5.00 so i figured i'd try it!
GEARS
- do it once! if you hvae a goal for your truck go one step higher! i went 4.56's (whitch are great for what i'm doing now), but when i get MORE LIFT, and BIGGER TIRES, i'll need MORE GEAR, thus i'm going w/ 5.38's! SO if any time after that i want 44's i already got the gear!
EXHAUST
-other than headers you might have to play around alittle, i'd get one set of headers and stay at that since they are a slight PAIN IN THE AZZ! to install!! i say go BANKS and you woun't have to worry about breakage.
