What, if any, are the drivetrain differences between 7.3 and v10?

I am looking to pick up a super duty in the future to use for a pretty extreme build with a 12v cummins. I would prefer to buy a V10 truck over a diesel if the rest of the drivetrain is the same. They sell for quite a bit less then the powerstroke equiped trucks.

Any input would be appreciated as this will be my first ford truck (have had a mustang and my wife has an explorer now). I have had nothing but dodge trucks in the past, and they have held up very well for me considering the things i have done to them. But the superdutys are the best looking trucks around and i would like to have one... I have searched around the web quite a bit before finding this site, and this looks like the best place to get some good solid information as i start my education on ford trucks.

Thanks,

Chris

Why would you want to get rid of the 7.3L?

Diesel trucks are built using heavier suspension to make up for the weight of the motor/trans

because he wants to put a 12v cummins in. you can get stupid power for extremely less money than doing it on a powerstroke. you can get about twice the HP and not have to break into the bottom end to beef up anything until 700hp or so, maybe more.

but i personally think that putting a Cummins in a Ford is like screwing your own sister.

I think you'll find they both use the same springs & axles.
All HD F250's have the same GVWR & all F350's have the same GVWR.

The 12v cummins uses a mechanical lift pump that is on the engine itself and driven by a lobe on the cam. So i think all i would need is a tank with a pickup and a return line plumbed to it and i should be good to go for fuel. What other accessories are you refering to?

Thanks,
Chris

Because I have a HP and TQ addiction. lol

The 4wd, quad cab, 24v dodge I sold a few months ago was only running 11.70's on diesel fuel only. I need more power this time around.

I had seen something reading old posts that there was an option for "maximum front springs" or something like that. I didn't see any mention of whether or not it was engine related. Any more info on this topic would be appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

actually, my Diesel Tech teacher is a Powerstroke Junkie too, and he told me that in class. however he didnt use the term "screwing".

jake00, i was referring to a Ford that the Powerstroke is only available in. i know that the 650 and 750 have cummins and Cat options, and i wasn't referring to them when i made that comment.

So what's the consensus? Are front and rear axles, u-joints, driveshafts, transfer case and tranny the same on the v-10's as they are on the 7.3's? If not, what are the differences?

Thanks,

Chris

well i think there might be some differences inside the tranny, but if your going to be making as much power as i think you are intending on, will you be keeping that tranny stock? the rest of the drive train should be the same, except for the gearing, a lot of v10's you can find with 4.30's which isnt an option on the diesels.

bobbo7915,

Thanks for the info. It will definitely need tranny upgrades no matter what. I believe both the v10 and the 7.3 come with the 4r100 tranny. From what i've seen on various websites they seem to be geared the same too, regardless of the engine they are put behind. I plan on calling BTS in the next few days to see what they have to say about building a ford tranny to hold the power i'm hoping to make.

I've read a lot of contradicting stuff though about the drivetrains, which is my main reason for posting this thread.

For example, i've read:

That 99-02's have 10.25 inch rears, and then i've read that they have 10.5 inch rears (i'm discussing the srw trucks only, i know the drw are D80's).

I've read that starting in 02 they switched to Dana 60 fronts instead of 50's. I've also heard that they made the switch in mid 01 to D60's, and other places i've even read that they didn't switch to D60's until the coil spring front ends in 05.

Then i've read that the diesels use different (i.e. bigger) u-joints then the gas trucks.

i don't know what is right and what is wrong. lol

Help.

Chris
