I found some many years ago at a local parts store. Think it may have been NAPA. You might have luck asking around at automotive paint stores as well. If you're looking for custom colors, though, you'll probably have to go the sign shop route ala tjc's suggestion.
The vinyl ones worked OK. I also knew someone who had his painted. I don't recall how much I paid for mine or how much my friend was charged by the painter.

If you are going to get letters done at a sign shop, make sure they use an automotive grade vinyl, kind of like they put on the newer trucks. If you cant get that, shoot for 3M premium 220 or better. Its thinner and has more adhesive than the lesser grade stuff, so it will last longer. It also shouldnt fade too quickly as it has a 7 year guarantee against fade. And if you can, stay away from Avery, they slid downhill real fast a short while back and the vinyl isnt the highest quality anymore.
Well im going to spray the basecoat on then clear over it. That should help with fading. I will check into the sign shop in town. Thanks for that info.
I deal a lot with getting signs /vinyl lettering for where I work. I tried to get my sign company to make my tailgate letters , but they needed the original text format to copy them. So, I went to Ebay. I am very pleased with the letters I got from there. Original F.O.R.D. stretched out to the right, vinyl letters. Pm me if you want the company name of where I got them. Not sure of the rules of posting non supporting vendors on here.

the girl that did mine did not bother with that format stuff. she did it low tech. she copied the outline of what we wanted, then set the tracing on her design table and followed the tracing with her computer mouse.
then whatever program she uses did the rest. it took all of about 5 minutes from start of the tracing to cut letters.
it actually took us longer to decide what color vinyl to use than it took to get the patterns in the computer.
According to my trusty National Parts Depot catalog, they have the stick-on letters. $17.95 for the set. Part No. F-42528-11. Available in the following colors (add the letter in the parenthesis after the 11 in the part no. for the desired color set):
Chrome Mylar (H)
Black (A)
Light Blue (B)
Dark Blue (BB)
Red (C)
White (E)
Silver (F)
Gold (G)
Tan (J)
I got my local sign shop to cut me out some letters. I took an old tailgate to the shop and they traced it out with some kind of pen that attatched to the computer. It took about 20min. He only charged me $10 which I thought was a deal so I asked him to cut me a set in black for my 79 F250 4x4. Nice quality and the good stuff which he said had a 7yr life against fading. Im going to clear over them which will probably help with the fading as well. Thanks for your help. I am going to post todays update on my 79 F150 4x4 so if youre interested check it out.
I cut some pieces of 16ga sheet metal to roughly the size of the cowl vents. Then I used a body hammer to beat the strips of metal that made the vent down about a 1/8" then tack welded it a few spots and filled the rest in with brass brazing rods. Sanded it down and used some filler to smooth it out. The pictures dont do it justice. It looks like glass. Ill try to post some more pictures. I got the idea from Mclaughlin (member on this site). Check his truck out also....AWESOME!
