Wifey wants and explorer after a little discusion last night. I really want a F-150 SuperCrew. I know explorer had a lot of problems in the past but now are they looking now. Ive been doing Homework on fords and other companies and I Narrowed it down to a Few. Now I am in the elimination stage of my buy. So give me a little insight/opinion or what yall think.
You just hve to decide whether you want a truck or a station wagon. I have my truck (F150) and my wife has her station wagon (Escape). I see an SUV as nothing more than a glorified station wagon. The Expedition replaced the Country Squire and the Explorer replaced the Torino wagon.
I traded in a 2003 Explorer for a 2004 F150 SCrew because I needed a bigger tow vehicle. The Explorer rode better and was better on gas than the F150, but the F150 has more room and can haul more stuff. If I didn't need the F150 for towing, I'd still have the Explorer.
I'd go with a an F150 my cousin has an explorer (2003) and i drove it a little bit but i didnt really care for it, wasnt really compfortable of course im 6'4'' so that might have something to do with it, but even if i wasnt tall i dont think i would have gone with an explorer when i bought my truck, the truck is a lot better in so many ways, but it depends on what you are going to be doing with it, that will influences your decision.

What kind of Screw do you have? I traded in an Eddie Bauer Expedition for my Lariat Screw 4x4. THe F-150 rides way better than the Ex ever though of and compared to the Explorer, it is night and day! As for the original question.... If you need a truck, then the F-150. If you need an Suv,then go there. If your just looking for an around town vehicle and don't need it for towing or anything else It would be all up to you. I looked at the Explorers for my wife about 6 months ago. I do not like what they did to the new ones. They took out a bunch of options on the Ebbie Bauer that used to be there. I didn't need a vehicle that big for her anyway. I also looked at the Escape. It was also very nice but $$ for $$ and warranty for warranty I bought a KIA Sorento. Not one seconds trouble with it to date! good gas mileage, great looks and a nice solid vehicle.
I just traded my 03 Exploder for a new F150! Couldn't be happier, F150 rides better, is quieter, power is no comparison, and will be a much better tow vehical. My Explorer was a great vehical up to about 50K, my boat was just too much of a load to pull with this vehical, by 78K the powertrain was in pretty rough shape. Every truck have their issues but the Explorers seem to have more than average, Auto 4wd was kicking in all the time, ring and pinion replaced, rear wheel bearings, tranny was slipping, etc... Resale value on Explorers is also horrible compared to an F150. Good Luck!
I have a 2004 XLT SCrew, 5.4L, 3.73 LS, 4x2. The Explorer was a 2003 XLS, 4.0L, 3.55, 4x2. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the F150 - it's a great truck and has a nice ride. But I also liked the Explorer. Maybe a 4x2 has a smoother ride than a 4x4.
One other thing to consider - parking. Sometimes it a bear to get the F150 out of certain parking conditions where as the Explorer was easier to maneuver in tight spaces.
Test drive both of them and get the one that you like best. I don't think you can go wrong either way.
I loved my 2003 Ford Explorer 4x4. I towed a 19' Sea Ray a total of 1600 miles twice..no problems. It had the tow package and V8. The thing was rock solid on snow. It did great on easy to moderate 4x4 trails in Moab, UT. Not cut out for anything difficult. The thing that impressed me was how it didn't develop any squeaks and rattles even after taking it over some pretty rough terrain. Don't get me wrong, I was careful and didn't beat on the thing. Up to 21mpg at 65mph on long trips. About 19mpg at 75mph. Had just some very minor warranty work..nothing powertrain related. I traded it in at 37K for a Titan so I can't say too much about the longevity of it. But I didn't trade it in on the fear it was going to suddenly break down. It was still a very good solid truck and I'm sure will give the next owner years of service. Only reason I traded it in was I'm single and now have a house. Just much handier to have a truck than SUV in my situation. As someone mentioned before trade in value will be higher on the F150 and is really a weak point with the Explorer. I've never had an F150 but my father has had five of them and all have been trouble free. You can't go wrong with it either.
Well I guess I will test drive both this weekend and see where they lead me. Hopefully I dont get suckered into a scam. I really do want a 05-06 Screw Lariat. I guess we will see this weekend. Thanks for all the insight guys
It really all depends on what your going to use your vehicle for unless your just buying either one to just have judging looks, ride, mileage and all that stuff
well I like the F-150 cause there are alot of aftermarket products for them. And they look really gorgeous on some 22's. Ive seen all kinds of performance mods and doorkits and hoods for them. I love the way a ford looks all hooked up. But the explorers have more room to sit in and is more family orientated. Yeah I guess I gotta talk it over with the wifey. I just love the F-150 though.
Hey navyboy.... You will have more room to comfortably sit 5 adults in the cab of a F-150 Screw. It rides better and the plus side to all this is you still have a bed to haul things in. If you're worried about losing cargo area then get a nice tonneau and be done with it. I have just as much room in the cab of my Lariat Screw 4x4 as I did in my Eddie Bauer Expedition.
Well I Have Have Both The Explorer Is An 04 And The F-150 Is 05 I Haven't Had Any Problems With Either It Basically Comes Down To Personal Preference. The Exp. Is Easier To Get Along With In The City But On The Open Road Or Country I Want The F-150. Which Ever You Do Decice To Go With If Its The F-150 Get The 5.4l If Its The Exp. Get The 4.0l Sohc.
You Would Be Very Surprised Over The Power That Little Motor Makes.
