Bare metal questions

Hello all,
This is my first try at any kind of paint prep work(other than hole fixing to pass state inspection). I was wondering How long a body should sit stripped to the bare metal? And what i could put on it to protect it from rusting or moisture while working on the rest of the truck fixing dings and dents? I will not be driving it just sitting in a garage while i spend a few weekends or months on it until it is spray time. New to the paint world and any suggestions on the prep for this would be greatly helpfull.
Also the previous owner of the truck i think painted it with a roller and/or a brush over top of what looks to be 2 other colors so it is posible that it has 1 primer layer and 3 color layers. So i am assuming that i should strip all layers to bare metal?
Thanks for your time

Not long at all. It will begin to flash rust with humidity moisture in the air, and you won't necessarily see when it has begun to start. I would apply an epoxy primer as soon as you can on any baremetal spots you have. Epoxy primer will protect and seal the surface. It usually takes a few days or so to fully cure, but it will still protect in the meantime. Any filler work you need to do can be done over the epoxy primer. It won't need to be sanded if you are within the time window to apply filler. If past the window, all you need to do is scuff it up with some 180 grit before you apply your filler. Check times for the brand of epoxy you are using. If you have sandblasted metal, that really likes to rust fast, so you want to get primer on it fairly soon. If you do have some flash rust, a scotchbrite pad should remove it. Probably not work easily on sandblasted or pitted metal thoug. Or you could use a scotchbrite pad and metal prep. Not sure metal prep is recommended on sandblasted surfaces though. For those I would reblast or try using a strip and clean disk to do a good job.
