I've also got a '66 F-250 with about 4 layers of paint on it. I've picked through the archives in search of tips, hints and suggestions for the best way to proceed with prep for paint, but I'd like some more input. What's the best way to get this truck down to bare metal so I can prime/seal the surface and start on bodywork? Aircraft stripper? Sandblast? Pay for media blasting? DA sander and paper? I'm kind of overwhelmed with options. Thanks as always...
Sounds like you already know most of the options. My preference would be to pay to have it media blasted. Chemical strippers are effective, but very messy and labor intensive. The same can be said for sanding.
After going through this myself, let me tell you what I think.....
Stripping to bare metal was a lot of work on my 73, and it had only the Stock factory paint on it.....
Sandblasting:Worked fairly well, hard on the compressor unless you have a big one..... but OH THE MESS, there was sand everywhere, including down all my clothes, in my hair....EVERYWHERE Im still finding sand in the garage 2 years later... we only did about 1/3rd of the truck this way before switching to the next method and saved the sand blasting for tight hard to get to areas.....
Grinding: I used a Milwaukie grinder for most of it, removed the guard and grinding wheel and put sandpaper discs on it, much faster, much more thorough, much cheaper, discs cost less than sand, only problem with this route was the hard to get to places..... so the sandblaster had to remain a part of the project....
All told I would say if you can afford it have it media blasted for you, I have no idea what it costs, and the answer may change my advice, but that was BY FAR the hardest part of my project so far, it just got its epoxy primer tonight in fact, and will get primer tomorrow.... there are pics in the NW forum if anyones interested
I have an 83 bronco with no rust and 2 layers of paint. The factory white and the 2nd is a dark blue a macco paintjob (no clear coat)that was done in the late 80's and is chipping around the edges of panels. Can I just go down to the good factory paint and repaint it ?
