starter gears stays engaged
My 2000 E350 has had a problem for a while. The original starter would leave the gear hanging out in the ring gear ( you can hear it ) until you accelerate. The starter itself is not still running it just leaves the gear hung in the ring gear. I replaced the starter with a new unit, not rebuilt, from AutoZone. It has done the same thing since installed quite some time ago. Why? I have read on the website of a company that makes permanent magnetic reduction gear starters that on some of the older Fords this can happen if the terminals have been jumped. In fact the pmgr starter actually can generate power if this happens. I have checked my connections and there is no shorting between the wires. What is going on here? How do I cure it?

The part in the starter that engages it is the Bendix, here's some info on it: http://www.ctci.org/membership/Gilsg...rterBendix.htm you can replace the bendix. But given the cheap price of a rebuilt starter, I think it's better to change the whole thing.
