Hi everyone,
Longtime member first time posting. Y'all helped me on my truck more than you know. I have a 1970 F100 short bed (five generation) grandfather bought it new and when my grandson rode in it that made 5. I finally started fixing her up. Not doing a "Resotration" I'm saving that for my Mustang. My question is: Does anyone have a fix for the poorly engineered tailgate hinges. The hinges themselves are okay but wear along with corrosion has really damaged my tailgate, but fixable. I would hate to repair the tailgate and just slap it back on the way it was.
The previous owner of my 69 rebuilt the hinges using iron pipe parts, they look pretty old, but still work well. I'm sure that with paint and grease they would last the life of the truck.
I thought of that, can you post some pics. I had another brainstorm today. Since the pivot part of the hinge is good and the tailgate is wore out, I was thinking of picking up some freeze plugs of a size to fit over the post, grinding out the rust on the tailgate and welding the freeze plugs in place.
The pivot point is supposed to have a plastic or teflon boot on it. I think some of the reprodution companies make them, that would take care of the play and tighten the hinge.
