A friend of mine is stranded in the bush with his 2001 1/2 ton...
A dash light came on that neither one of us is familiar with. He said it looks like "1/2 a car with a bolt sticking out of it". Does anyone have any idea what this is indicating...Truck was running fine just idling and died. It will crank but not restart. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I just ran out and looked at my '01. Turned ignition on without starting vehicle to illuminate warning lights and can't find any light similar to your description. I checked the manual and it doesn't have anything like that either.
Yes it has got fuel...Thanks for the reply and the effort of checking out your own truck...I/he appreciates it. He had to work in the am so another friend...closer than me drove out and picked him up. THey abandoned it for the night. We live in an extremely isolated part of Alberta, so there's no chance anyone will vandalize the truck...Plus you need 40" tires to even reach where he is at...I'll have to throw some pics up of this rig...
Dana 60 solid axle swap 5:13 gears,
10.25 sterling rear with detroit locker
Aprox 12" suspension and 3" body lift
Zex nitrous,intake,exhaust etc
40" boggers
Nice rig, mine looks the same but ALLOT smaller, im only 3" up with 35" buckshots, A ranch hand front bumper would set that thing off like noones buisness and as for the light you got me maybe it means your screwed? i'll def ask around though incase my truck ever indicates im screwed...see me gallery if you wanna check out the ranch hand replacement

Good stuff, triton54. I hope I don't get a "You're screwed" light any time soon.
My bet is the fuel cutoff switch or a fuse. But if he said he was just idleing when it died, perhaps it's fuel pump related? Luckily with that truck, you don't even have to jack it up to work underneath it
Illuminates when the fuel cap is not installed correctly. Check the fuel cap for proper installation. When the fuel filler cap is properly re-installed, the light(s) will turn off after a period of normal driving. Continuing to operate the vehicle with the check fuel cap light on, or a mis-installed fuel cap can activate the Service Engine Soon/Check Engine warning light. It may take a long period of time for the system to detect an improperly installed fuel filler cap.
For more information, refer to Fuel filler cap in the Maintenance and specifications chapter.
That is a condition I had last week on my 2001. If this truck has been bounced around, then you might check connections to the computer. That is what my mechanic found on mine. I do not know where that is, but maybe one of these techs here can tell you.
Not yet. Upon closer investigation the "idle air controller" seems like is screwed. We could here a relay switching on/off repeatedly. You could feel a constant vibration in the idle air controller (little device on the backside of the Throttle body...held on by two 8mm bolts, has an electrical plug). We towed the truck back and should have a new idle air controller today...Hopefully its the actual controller thats screwed...if not its whatever electrical device that controls the air controller output. (I'm not sure what actually tells the device to actuate)

I think it would be kind of odd that this wouldn't allow you to restart, but let us know if that fixes it or not. It DOES make sense that that's why it died while idling though. If you've read through the threads here, you know that the IAC is a VERY common problem, but usually getting it started isn't the problem, it's keeping it idling. Even if this is out, you can usually keep your foot on the gas and keep the engine running.
If this doesn't fix it, back to the drawing board. Take a look at luckybturd's post if the fuel cap, fuel cutoff switch, or a fuse aren't the problem
By the way, people are usually paying between $65-72 for the IAC.

If the IAC is full of gunk clean it with an electronic parts cleaner. If that solves the problem I'd go ahead and replace it. I my IAC cleaned due to a high idle situation. Worked fine for a couple weeks then the problem started returning. It wasn't near as bad as it was but since I replaced it there have been no issues.
