I have been working on getting my speedometer fixed for about a year now and have come to the conclusion it is the gear in the t-case. I was wanting to know if you can replace this gear without opening up the case maybe thru the end after you pull out the yoke and maybe pull the seal. I can pull out the speedometer cable and put my finger in the hole and move the gear inside the t-case back and forth about 3/4 of a inch is this normal?? I can put the gear towards the back of the truck and it will make the speedometer not work at all, put it to the front and the speedometer will work fine for a while and ideas anyone. thanks scott dove
Yes, you can replace the gear by doing as you describe. Remove the yoke and seal behind the seal you'll find a metal sleeve with a plastic gear wrapped around it. I had to go to Ford for my replacement and the metal sleeve and gear come together as one part. I think it was less than $50.00, but I can't remember. Take speedometer cable out first. Slide new gear in, tap in a new seal, replace yoke, put speedometer cable back in and that's it.
I have found that you can buy a little time by taking a short piece of exhaust tubing that will fit inside the seal and over the metal sleeve then you tap the plastic gear to drive it back and let it catch the speedo gear on different parts of the teeth. This doesn't last forever as it wears out again.
