alright so here is the deal......i have to pull the transmission on my 99 powerstroke 4x4 (check sig) to replace the torque converter. The converter has actually been going out for a while now but it has finally gotten too bad to drive. It is still the factory converter. I have pulled my transmission on my z28 4 times now and its not that bad......of course it weighs nothing compared to this monster. Oh yah i forgot to mention i would be doing this on the ground in my driveway! I am borrowing a transmission jack/craddle to help with the pull from an autoshop i worked at. What i really need is either a write-up of how to do this to make it easier or a few pointers from someone who has done it "shadetree style" also. Thanks for any advice you could give me!
FYI- the truck has about 26x,xxx miles on it now and has given me no trouble whatsoever except for the waterpump at 140,000 miles.
Wow I have lerned something new! I didnt realize that a converter could go out with out taking the rest of the transmission with it. Hummmmmmm..........I shure dont know what you are refuring to when you say "Shadetree style", but If you have disconected the transfer case before the pull you were on the right track, alone it isnt to bad, but it still will take a couple of people to do it. one to lift the tranny and one to aline the tourque converter bolts to the flywheel. The trick is getting the tranny at the same angle of slope as the moter, as it tends to rock back twards the ground when the transmission isnt on it, and even more when it is till you have the crossmember that supporst it in the rear installed. HOpe this helps,
Brad
well the truck still runs and drives just fine. But the torque converter is making that god awful rattling noise at idle. I used to work at an automotive shop through high school and took my truck back by there to get a second opinion on what the noise was. The mechanic and i both agreed it was the torque converter. I haven't started on pulling the tranny yet. As soon as i get home friday I will be tearing into it. I'm pretty mechanically inclined for my age so i dont think i will have to hard of a time but i just didnt know if anyone had made a writeup for this yet. Thanks for the help guys and keep it coming!
Ok Brent,
one thing you should check, before dropping the tranny, would be the tourque converter bolts. Make shure that the four bolts that hold the converter to the flywheel hasent come loose. That would explain the rattle, and you can do this throught the inspection cover. Important!!! check the tightness with a 6 sided socket only, they are lock nuts and will need some force to work them. if you use a 12 sides socket you will round the corners off, then you will have a lot of trouble getting the bolts off later. Hope this helps.
