hey guys, my speedometer is not working at times. Also, when it is not working, the "overdrive off" light is flashingand it will not go into 4th gear. ussually turning the excursion off and cranking it back up seems to "fix" it most ofthe time. anyone else have this problem or know what the source of the problem is? Thanks again.

I have had the same issue with my X. It also logs a code of P0500 when this happens.
I have been told that if it isnt a wiring harness issue that the sensor is either bad or it has metal filings on it and needs to be cleaned. The part is less than 20 bucks so if I am crawling under the truck to clean it I may as well replace it instead.
Yep, check your A-S, or your rearend whichever you prefer, the speed sensor is in there and runs off the ring gear, if it is acting funny, might be time for a fluid change and to clean it off. How many miles? Always remember, changing fluids is a helluva lot cheaper than changin parts!!!
I have experienced this exact problem also, but mine is accompanied by a massive loss of power. Alot of the warning lights on the dash stay lit also. Although I don't have a solution, and it seems to happen when it rains really heavilly, the problem seems to be electrical. Whenever this happens, my drivers door window, which usually takes a long time to go up or down, will operate very quickly.

The VSS is used by the computer to calculate many settings of engine control and transmission shifts. A short or water in the sensor connector could send faulty info causing unexpected results. Although I wouldn't expect (massive) power loss.

Where is the VSS located? Some posts here say a problem like this is caused by the CPS (Cam Position Sensor), located near the bottom front passenger side of the engine (Makes sense for the possibility of water intrusion). And there is definitely a MASSIVE loss of power during one of these events.

Heatmon I don't know where the sensor is. The dealer replaced mine. I have read it's on the rear of the trans, but I looked and didn't see it on mine. I also read the sensor on the diff is for the ABS.
