I did a search just turned up a big greay area. I toying with modifying my 80 Bronco, and I was wondering how much lift I'd get from flipping the rear shackles. I am going to avoid blocks at any cost, I can't stand wheel hop. I do plan on throwing a D44 from a 78/79 Bronco under the front, lifted to suit, probably around 35s on it.
Never done a shackle flip, but they say 2-3" is the norm. You'll probably need a 6" lift on the front to clear 35's with the little wheel openings on the 80. Might be easier to do with a 4" spring pack in the rear???
A shackle flip will get you 3".
I don't know how'd it work for a 80s model bronco with a 78 79 Bronco D44, but it only takes 4" to clear 35s on a 78 79 Bronco.
You could put a 2" add a leaf in the back while your there, and you'd have all the lift you want for the rear.
Of coarse you will need to regear to at least 4.11 to get stock performace/acceleration/mileage back.
Let us know what you decide, and how it comes out.
3" seems like a lot to me... it could be though, I am not that familiar with the 80's model. You do realize if you flip just the rear shackle you rear will be lifted by half the added hieght? A 3" increase in ride hieght (at the axle) would mean the rear mounting point of the spring had to go up by 6" since the front mounting point doesnt change.
Ok, so I'll probably drop the front mount point as well then. I don't want a block, I like the stock spring rate, and it looks like fairly new springs anyways. I like flex, this will be a trail use vehicle, so I have no place on it for something like traction bars or other add-ons to overcome design and engineering errors, only to create their own problems.
I will be keeping the sway bars with quick disconects, though, I'm not suicidal.
If you just flip the rear shackle, you will get 3" of lift, if you drop down the front shackle you will get more lift, depending on how low you drop it, just go to the offroad forum, and search shackle flip, it seems to be asked in there 1 or 2 times every few weeks.

Where did you find quick disconects for the sway bars. Ran without them for a while and loved it of road but it was aproching sucide on the highway.
no swaybars on my ride!!! not as bad of a ride as you think, if you dont drive like an ********* on the street, you wont like like one! its not a sportscar (only in the dirt) hehe usually people hear the boggers hummin and the pipes burpn everyone tend to get outta yer way anyhow!
I put a 4" Superlift under my 86 instead of the blocks in the back we did the shackle flip in the back, came out perfect even sits up in the back a little like it did before. I started with 33s but went to 35s fit fine would rub on the radius arms a little but not on the bodly at all.
Rear dissconnects are as simple as replacing the lower mount bolts with wingnuts. Use stainless so they won't rust. Then remove, swin links up and ziptie to a hole in the frame, and swing the swaybar up and ziptie it to the leaf spring. Pretty easy.
I also used clevis pins in the front to replace the bolts, so they can be removed easily. Then swing the bar up and zip tie it.
Isold that Bronco before coming up with somethiing besides zipties to hold stuff up away from the trail.
So I can buy these and get 4.5 inches of lift in the back without any other problems and nothing other than some hand tools (i don't have a welder..)? and then buy some new coil springs for the front and be good to go?
