I get a squell sound from my 6637 intake when the boost and rpm is up
and change gears.[automatic]The boost drops off and rebuilds as the rpms build. The sound is not a whoosh,[like air going back though the intake]it is a squell.Maybe it is some kind of intake leak but I dont think so.the path of least resistance would be the filter. The truck only has 55,000 on it.Maybe I will hook the waistgate line back up and see if that makes a differance.Any other Ideals
Clint you must have an open exhaust. i just rebuilt my turbo about 2-3K miles ago. i have a completely open exhaust, with a 1.15 turbine and no EBPV in the way. i love to build boost right at the end of the gear so i can let off and let the turbo squeal. i think it is pretty awesome. nothing to be scared about. it is defanitely the turbine whistle, not a compressor noise. you can hear it out of the exhaust, not the intake.
OK I just checked the end play and there is none,However I did find the hose clamp at the turbo loose.I also ran a bead of silicone around the tube that gose into the filter and hooked the red line back to the waistgate.I'll see if that helps. On a long hard pull at WOT it was building 20 and 21 lbs boost, empty it will only build 15lbs boost. The egt would not go over 1000 deg.[stock PCM] This seems about right to me.Also I dont notice the squell noise when empty, but again it is not building that much boost.
It sure dosent sound like it is coming from the exhaust,it is coming from under the hood. The kind of noise like letting air out of a baloon real slow or a bad bearing in a blower motor.just a short burst and gose away. The bearings in the turbo are good and tight so I dont think that is the problem. It may have been the loose clamp I found but I wont know for sure until I get hooked to the 5th wheel again in a couple of weeks.I do have a 4'' exhaust, boost reg, sonnax kitt, and gauges.DP-tuner is on order.

Mine will do the same thing, more of a bearing squeal, may be the same thing you are referring to. I rebuilt the turbo, replaced the journal bearing, made sure everything was tight no leaks and such. Guess what, it will still do it when pulling heavy load. I guess I will wait for something to break as I have no idea what is causing the noise. Maybe it is all air and sounds different, but mine definately is coming from under the hood driver side. But is sure make one nervous not knowing what is actually is.
Now that you mention it, I have heard that as well, I replaced the belt on mine. Still made no difference, probably the actual fan clutch failing. I am thinking of going electric once it really needs to be replaced.
now that i think about it, BuickTurbo has it right. i get a woosh below 10 psi and the squeal above 10psi. dont know what it was in me that made me think that the turbine was making that.
hopefully my ATS will amplify this sound, because i LOVE it.
