Windows Question

Our company has "badges" which are really just a credit card looking thing with the magnetic strip on the back that are used when employee's clock in and out. What we want to be able to do is use the same type setup (not neccessarily the same credit card thing) to logon to our company network with windows Xp PRO. I have seen in the movies when someone go into their office they just swipe their credit card thing in the reader and boom that is the same as the user name and password.

What are those things actually called so that I can shop for them

Thanks,
RC

Also I have seen them to where you can have them open doors to secured rooms and such. Is it possible to get a single card to logon, clock in and out, and open doors?
Thanks,
RC :-)

I'll bet it is possible, but it would actually decrease your security. If all that info is stored on the card, then what happens if you loose your card? Or worse yet, what happens if someone steals the data from your card and you don't notice?
I don't know what kind of buisness you are hoping to use this in, but I'd check with a corporate security expert before going too far down this path.

I know there are the biotronic ones (finger print) out there. The only company that I know of that make'em for computers (&such) is HID.

I know most companies are moving to the RFID reading systems, so I'm sure if you keep a good look out on Ebay or another source that handles "used buisn. equip" you may find something that has been replaced by an RFID system

I know they have the systems for entering rooms and for time keeping, but I do not think they have them to logon to your pc automatically.
Just because it was in a movie doesn't necessarily mean it will work. I saw in Mr Destiny Jim Belushi sits in a chair and the Computer turns on. He comments that the thing is wired to my A$$...

I know there is a Simplex company that has the security entry systems. You might try seaching for their site.

After you have a device to read the card the rest is really just software to put the info in the right place. So software maybe be more of a problem than hardware. While rfid is cool for the moment you may want to watch out for try to implanting it (can't lose it that way) (666) Good luck and God Bless

I have seen and was going to buy a Fingerprint module version of that idea.

Aside from cutting off another person's finger it should be secure enough.
