hi, right now i have a 351W in my 86 F-250 4x4 and i was wondering if its possible to drop in a diesel engine that will bolt up to the tranny. im not exactly sure what kind of tranny ive got, i only know its a 4 speed standard. im mostly interested in something simple like an older diesel engine, the IDI sounds like a good engine from what ive been reading, but im not sure if its the same bolt pattern. (btw, what does IDI stand for?)
I have been thinking about this same thing for my 1983 F-250 High boy. Although I have been thinking of maybe droping in a 6.0 or even a cat motor. Although I know a 6.0 would be a wiring mess.
since ive been reading that you can pretty much dump in anything from cooking oil to used motor oil (yea i know theres a little more to it than that), i am thinking it might be a good idea to jump on the diesel band wagon while theres still time. diesel engines seem to be the answer to the riseing gas prices now that bio diesel is quickly catching on, and i just like the simplicity of them. theres an alternative gasoline called butanol that could solve the riseing gasoline prices but it looks like it will be at least another 10 years or so before that becomes a reality. those new smart cars must be running on diesel for a good reason....
I believe a 4 cyl Cummins Diesel out of a Ford Box van will bolt up, but they did not make many with this engine option. That is probably the only engine that will bolt, however, FordCummins.com sells adapter plates for 6 cyl cummins, I believe they are $650. You also have to move your tranny back 3 inches for this option. Advance adaptors may sell something like that, but I'm not sure. It would not be that big of a deal to swap in an old 6.9 or 7.3 from an older ford, but it will not bolt up.
