Hello Folks, I'm new to the forums,I have a issue with my 97 Ford Explorer,
The check engine light came on about 3 weeks ago, took it to advance auto, they said I had a misfire in cylinders 1 & 4, I changed the plugs & wires thinking this should be the problem, but still running rough, any ideas ? any suggestions would be appreciated.
Did you pull the codes again after the plugs and wires were done, and did they still indicate a misfire in 1 & 4? Also, were the codes reset after you did the wires and plugs?
I had a similar problem with my 94 Explorer. One of my cylinders wouldn't fire for the longest and not having time to check it myself, I had some other people look at it, and they all had several different opinions.
But after ruling out the things they said was wrong with it, I checked it myself. I made sure the plugs and wires were good first, then I pulled the wires off the coil pack and checked them and the coil pack.
Turns out, one of the connectors on the coil pack was so corroded that the wire couldn't get enough connection to pull a spark. Yanked the coil pack off, give it a good cleaning with a small bottle-nipple cleaner thing and WD40. Put it back on, started it up and, Voila, no more cylinder misfire.
Just a suggestion before you buy any new parts, you might want to check the coil pack for any corrosion.
I have now replaced the plugs, wires & coil pack & pcv valve & still have the same issue, any suggestions, I really need to get this on the road, I'm down to 1 vehicle.
